Hi pika,
If you have any other security program that runs in real time on your PC, you must uninstall it before trying to install Norton. Also, if your PC is already infected with malware, it may be blocking the installation. These are the two most common causes of installation failure. Let us know if either of these apply in your case.

Hello pika
Are you trying to install NIS 2010 or NIS 2012? Was this just a typo?

Hello pika
Please try running the Norton Removal Tool since you tried to install NIS 2012 on top of an expired N30. See if you can find the Norton product first in the control pael listing for add/remove and remove it in this was and reboot.
Please pick the appropriate product from this list at this site
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view
Thanks to AllenM for the link.
You can then try installing NIS 2012 from this link
Link for NIS 2012
www.norton.com/nis12 (Norton Internet Security 2012)
Please remember to run live update to get all updates and then reboot once more. Thanks.
(thanks to Yaso for the links.
Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

Hi,
Did you ran the Norton Removal tool suggested in the previous posts?

Hello
If you can't run the removal tooll in regular mode, then try to run it in safe mode. In safe mode, perhaps you can try finding the NIS 2012 installer and delete that folder. There are probably some registry items that could be deleted also, but I can not tell you which ones and since you wanted a step by step instructions, I don't think it would be a good idea for you to monkey around in the registry.
