To all,
thanks to all. i finally got rid of the virus and norton is showing me a good sign.
i did a couple of things as recommended here . i used the malwarebytes anti-malware and it got rid of 7 more infected files; remove some unidentified HKEY values and rebooted the computer. i got my desktop back and my incoming and outgoing emails are scanned and secured.

This same problem occurred on my home PC, XP Antivirus 2008 showed up as installed when I booted up yesterday. I did a search on the Symantec site and found the problem listed along with instructions for removal.
After doing everything specified twice including running Liveupdate to get the most recent virus profiles I was still having the problem, a very frustrating event considering that I keep my Norton Internet Security registered annually and run LiveUpdate frequently.
I found this string, downloaded and ran the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware software as suggested. Two and a half hours later it had identified the problem and zapped it out of my computer.
My question is why wasn't Norton Internet Security and/or Norton System Works able to do this that easy? I can understand how XP Antivirus 2008 might have slipped through my Norton defenses but I just don't understand why I had to get a 3rd party product to remove it when I have all of these otherwise great Symantec products loaded.
Is there any information that I can provide regarding this malicious software?
I am using Norton Internet Security 2008 and Norton System Works.

My friend had this too in his XP sp2, two times. He's using NIS 2008, (Me too, but vista 64) I recommended it for him...
Norton just keeps letting it get in.
So frustrating to let him pay 80€ for that and it cant keep even so harmful program out, just lets that XP antivirus to take control of whole computer.
I have to visit him again soon and reinstall the whole system... His XP is a total mess now!
Gonna put XP firewall on and avast in. Sorry Symantec, just repair your program first!
