system has errors but fix now finds none. live update wont process

whenever I try to run LiveUpdate t completes but fails at applying protvection updates. As soon as it moves to download updates, it  gets the greencheck like it worked. It fails during the proccessing portion. an endless loop of at risk, fix now, complete. The folowing screens shots best describe the sequence of events contributing to norton not working as advertised for me.

Norton Autofix should be able to fix this. Open Norton Internet Security and click Support > Get Support. This process should download a new definition set to replace the existing ones. Depending on your Smart Definitions setting, this may be a fairly large download.

If your System Status is now Secure, run LiveUpdate to ensure everything is up-to-date.

Neithre solution worked. It showed that liveupdate was installing 2 updates totalin 72.61 MB, and it took a brief moment to install them before showing the updates complete. That screen looks like this

Then the next screen looks something like this

e.jpg

When I run the scan again (after "processing" fails) I get this screen stating that my Norton product has the latest updates!

If I have the latest updates, why does the application report that it has an error?

I have un/reinstalled, and even reimaged the computer. I have moved the computer from one router to another. An entirely different ISP actually (from HughesNet to Comcast). I have the standard Dell system load out of VIsta Home Premium. Itunes is the only additional software on the computer, other than the bloatware from Dell and Norton Internet Security 2012. The iTunes installation is vanilla and hasn't been reconfigured, nor have any of the system settings/registry.

Norton autofix doesn't think anything is wrong. My NIS'12 is bipolar.

Hi mnorth198:

If you check the Norton Error Reporting in your security history (in NIS 2011, I click the History link on the main NIS window and select Norton Error Reporting from the dropdown list), is there a specific Module ID and Error ID (e.g., 8920,223) associated with recent errors on your system?

If I were you I would just following the instructions here and try a clean re-install of NIS 2012 using the Norton Removal Tool.  It's a bit of a pain to do this but it might be faster than trying to troubleshoot what's wrong with your current installation.

Edit:

You mentioned Comcast and Dell in message # 4.  Have you ever had Comcast's Norton Security Suite (essentially Norton 360) or any other security software on this problem PC?  If so, there is a special Norton Removal Tool for Norton Security Suite at www.norton.com/nrt and we may have to tweak the instructions for performing a clean re-install of NIS.  I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that Comcast provided the Norton Security Suite free to their customers (see press release here).  Is there any chance you installed NIS 2012 by mistake and then tried using a product activation key for Norton Security Suite to activate NIS?

Orphaned files and registry entries from previously installed security software (e.g., McAfee, AVG, etc.) can also cause these types of problems and there are removal tools available to wipe these security programs off your system if this is an issue.  Your Dell laptop could even have built-in security software installed at the factory that might be interfering with NIS 2012.

Hi mnorth1984,

One of your screenshots is showing your last system scan was performed on 1/4/2012 - so your system clock is not correct.  That will prevent updates from installing.  Please set the correct time and date on your system and run LiveUpdate again.

Sounds like the reasonable solution until I look at the next post...
