When I ran live update earlier today, it down loaded a very large update. It was something like 69MB or 79BM. There were three updates in it.
When it finished I thought I would see a message that I would need to restart my computer, but that didn't happen; no restart was required.
The NIS 2012 build number did not change. It is still 19.5.0.145
Does anyone have any idea why the update was so much larger than the typical update?
Thanks
Mike

Hey Mike1776
have you checked Norton History and scroll down to Liveupdate (LU), thier you will find all the updates that Liveupdate have downloaded to your computer.
My guess is that Liveupdate downloaded Virus definitions database, it does that sometimes.
I hope this helps you.

Hello all,
Yesterday, there was a 139.78 MB ( ! ) Live Update download on my W7 64-bit PC that did not show up on my XP PC. That large download was for NIS 2012 Web Protection Definitions, Virus Definitions x64 and a Reputation Revocation List.
Today there was a 39.+ MB download with an "NIS Engine" and Norton Activity Map Data.
The larger than usual volume was a little surprising, but no restart was required in either case, and the NIS 2012 version is still 19.5.0.145.
(P.S. Recently, I've been missing the contributions from "Allen M". Hope all is well.)

I did a manual live update today and also got an unusually large update of 36 MB with a restart required. I got the NIS engine and NIS resources among a total of nine items.
My NIS 2012 is now updated to version 19.6.1.8. which I assume is correct.

I had the same updates and also now show 19.6.1.8 version number.
Does anyone have information on what was fixed since 19.5.x.x?

Hi, guys
Not so long time ago I was concerning about large definitions update. I don't like when my live update goes to the Internet every day without my permission and downloads something. So my Live Update downloads it's update every two week. But size of this update a huge. 160Mb as minimum. Why so large?
It's a good question. I read most of similar topics, but Norton's engineers always answer "bla bla bla"
The truth is "money". Virus production is a very hard work. So there is no cause to download 6Mb/day or 180Mb/month for "virus definition". The real cause is traffic. Many users use mobile internet and we all know how expensive this connection, but Live update steal from us 6Mb of very expensive traffic every day without notice.
Okay, if there are no so much viruses, what the content of virus definition?
It's a good question too. The answer is "keygens".
NIS works for two employers. Mobile operators and .... software manufacturers. Viruses... there are no viruses but all want to get money.
NIS inserts cracks, keygens tools inside of virus definition files instead of viruses.
So if you use NIS you can't install cracked software. AND YOU PAY FOR IT.
Worse then NIS is only one MIcrosoft and their BITS. This is the best "fake" downloader. They download in background mode 100MB per day, and just rewrites the same updates.
In comparison with Microsoft, NIS 6Mb per day looks quite modest.

Hi Folks,
As noted by Krusty13 earlier, please see this post for details on this update.
If you are not receiving the 19.6 update please restart your computer and run live update manually and see if it is received.
When the 19.6 update is received another restart should be requested, after which the version should be 19.6.
Best wishes.
Allen

Could this be the update that makes NIS2012 better and more reliable than NIS2011 ?
I'll watch the reports with interest :)
