Hi, tjhar,
Sorry to see you're having problems.
A few things first:
01. Was the Virus Scan of Norton a Full System or a Quick Scan? And was it Dis-Connected from the Internet?
02. Did you Run any Removal Tools for your previous Anti-Virus Product, or did you just un-install it via Add-Remove?
03. You could try a Full Scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware in Safe Mode, Dis-Connected from the Internet, as well as with Norton; just remember to Update both Products before Scanning in Safe Mode.
04. What Norton Product are you using?
05. Let us know how you get on.
You can keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on your computer since this is the free edition, which does not have any Real-Time Protection.

i ran a full system scan as did the support guy, i used add remove to uninstall avira. i can't really find any leftover files anywhere. i also scanned with an updated version of malwarebytes not in safe mode. im using norton antivrus 2009. it runs very well on my other computer on the same network. its light and updates fine on my other computer with essentialy the same programs. the one not working will update on startup and occasionally during the day, but it's been several hours since the last update. after the first update live update will not usually work untill the next reboot. sometimes if i hit live update it will finally kick in a couple of hours later but usually it does nothing, not even an error message.

Hi, tjhar,
I just would like to make you aware that Norton AntiVirus 2009 does not have a Firewall; I would suggest N.I.S. 2009, it is just as light as Norton AntiVirus 2009 only with more Protection Features.
Please let me know when you're Completed a Full Scan with both Products in Safe Mode, Dis-Connected from the Internet.

Although I support computer users I must confess I don't understand much about your setup <s>
I notice: << the hard drives are synced, so they are about the same. >>
Noit sure exactly what you mean by this nor how it is achieved but is it possible, on one possible meaning of synched, that as a result the file that keeps track of updating thinks it has been updated because the other has?
FWIW

i use windows live sync to keep my documents photos and things matching. i don't sync any of the system files or things like that. i turned it off just to see if it would help, but it didn't. some progams do keep setup files and various thinks in the document folder, so i looked in it to see if i was possibly syncing some norton stuff, but i didn't see anything except the norton key. thanks.

That is an excellent idea Huwynger. This is some information on synching:
1. Synchronize files between PCs, hard drives, client/server networks, and laptops.
2. Automatic scheduled syncs and backup operations.
3. Automatically detects which files in a directory have changed, synchronizes those changes to a destination directory, and then logs which files have been synchronized.
4. Copy files from network to your local machine - work locally. Network traffic is minimized.
5. Detect file changes at preset intervals.
6. Protect your vital corporate data - make a backup.
7. Replicate entire directory branches or individual files - very flexible, powerful, and easy to use.
8. Prevents data loss from update conflicts - will make a backup if both source/destination files have changed.
9. Automatically save the log on a daily/weekly basis.
# 4 is particularly interesting considering the problem.

i would like to get the antivirus working first before i think about upgrading. i'm behind a router anyway, much better than a software firewall. i will do another scan in safe mode and get back to you. i havent had a virus in years, i don't even get tracking cookies. thanks.

Thanks for the explanation -- I was reading about MS Live Synch in the paper PC Mag that arrived today.
for some reason, after about four days and four reinstalls and numerous scans norton finally started updating normally. i did nothing new. maybe it fixed itself. i'll watch and see what happens. i'll also keep an eye on live sync just in case that's causing a problem. thanks for all of the suggestions.i do like the product. it's lighter than a lot of the free versions and has a fare about of settings. it's nothing like the slow bloated version i remembered. hopefully it continues to work. thanks
