Re: what does OPTIMIZE really do?

It basically runs the default defragmenter on your system. On most PCs that's Windows Defragmenter.  It just runs windows defragmenter to optimize your pc.

Hello Snadge

According to Wikipedia  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Program_optimization

program optimization or software optimization is the process of modifying a software system to make some aspect of it work more efficiently or use fewer resources.[1] In general, a computer program may be optimized so that it executes more rapidly, or is capable of operating with less memory storage or other resources, or draw less power

That's basically what optomizing a computer means. You can read more about the topic at the link I listed above.

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.

Re: what does OPTIMIZE really do?

If you have a dedicated third-party defragmenter, turn Optimizer off. PerfectDisk, Diskeeper, and so on, do a better job at it and will be better off not having another defragmenter disturbing their work.

Re: what does OPTIMIZE really do?

i run O&O Defrag Professional 12.0 , should I disable optimize or does it run O&O? - my comp has been optimzed once two days ago and im sure it starts up that little bit quicker but surely Windows 7 defrag is not better than O&O...?

Re: what does OPTIMIZE really do?

I think you should disable idle time optimization in your NIS if you use a different optimizer.

Re: what does OPTIMIZE really do?

No Norton doesn't have its own.  Only Norton 360 does.  How do I know, just click "optimize" and open up disk defragmenter.  It will show that its running.

Trust Norton for security, trust your dedicated defragmenter for defragging. :smileyhappy: I'd suggest letting your O&O do all the defragging on your system. For those who don't have any third-party defragmenter, letting the Norton Optimizer handle it might be a good idea.
