IE9 and NIS toolbar question

I've noticed that if I open IE9, the Norton Toolbar and Identity Safe Icon show up.  I did notice that if I pin a website to the desktop (Like this Community Forum), the Norton Toolbar and Identity Safe Icons do not show up???  By using the pinning feature, am I bypassing NIS security?   Have I missed something?  Is there a way I can get my username and password to be entered from Identity Safe?   I'm using Windows 7 and NIS 2102 using IE9 (I haven't tried it with Firefox.  I just upgraded to ver 13 and I am still setting up options.

Hi PC_confused,

What you are seeing is correct.  Opening a site that is pinned to the task bar opens an isolated IE page and the Norton Toolbar does not display.  I had this site pinned for a short period until I realised the ID Safe wouldn't fill to sign in.

Yes,  you are still protected.

So now I have limited sites pinned and instead rely on bookmarks (IE calls them favorites).  As far as i am aware,  you can't pin sites with Firefox or Chrome.

Dave.

Re: IE9 and NIS toolbar question

As Krusty13 said, this is the nature of pinned sites.  By design, they open with all toolbars and browser helper objects disabled.

Re: IE9 and NIS toolbar question

Thank you for the information, Krusty13..  I thought I was having a problem..  Looks like others have already found and explained the problem.

That was good reading, SendOfJive, it looks like pinning is almost as secure as Identity Safe (just a little more work)..

Much of the security afforded by pinning a site stems from the fact that you are avoiding the possibility of mistyping the address of the site you want to visit into the browser's address bar.  Using a bookmark or Favorite offers the same protection.

One advantage of using Identity Safe to login to a site is that the login field will only be autofilled if the address of the website you are on matches the genuine address in the IDS data store - if you go to a phishing site that looks identical to your banking site, for example, Identity Safe will not try to log you in, and the phishers will not get your credentials.  Identity Safe won't be tricked by a fake site that looks identical to the real thing, as a human might be.  This is one of the big advantages of using Identity Safe that is often overlooked.
