Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

So after restarting the computer i noticed NIS icon appearing on the desktop (usually means NIS has updated). I checked the version number and noticed it had changed. With a smile i started my browser, logged into Norton identity safe and logged into my mail and facebook. Right after the plugin would crash in chrome, but the fun part is that it is still able to fill out logins... It's just annoying that its crashing. (the toolbar disappears aswell and if i click the icon to the right of the adress bar, the message will reappear.)

Google Chrome 21.0.1180.79 m

Windows 7 64-bit SP1 fully updated (updated earlier today)

Norton Internet Security 19.8.0.14

Other plugins installed in chrome: Adblock

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Hi Salihb,

I am also experiencing this behaviour. I too have Norton Internet Security 2012 installed with the most recent update 19.8.0.14.

I also have Google Chrome Beta, version 21.0.1180.79 installed with the following plugins enabled:

Adobe Pepper Flash: 11.3.31.227

Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.271

Native Client (21.0.1180.79)

Chrome PDF Viewer (21.0.1180.79)

Google Talk v3.4.2.8800

Google Talk Video Accelerator v0.1.44.16

Microsoft Office (Office Authorization plug-in for NPAPI browsers) v14.0.4730.1010

Microsoft Office 2010 Version 14.0.4761.1000 (is an Office File Viewer plugin)

Microsoft Silverlight 5.1.10411.0

Google Update 1.3.21.115

The Norton Confidential Plugin is version 2012.5.5.11

I have the following plugins disabled:

Remoting Viewer

Adobe Acrobat PDF Plugin v10.1.4.38

There are no issues with using the Identity Safe plugin with IE 9.0.8 (32 bit). The Identity Safe plugin for IE 9 32 bit is also 2012.5.5.11.

I have not yet installed the Microsoft security updates that became available yesterday but will do so later today.

The behaviour I am experiencing is identical to yours e.g. I can log into the Identity Safe (I am using the online (cloud) version of the Identity Safe) with my passwords and then access my logins for my Gmail account. Upon successfully logging into Gmail using the Norton Identity Safe, I receive a message (a yellow information bar) at the top of the window stating that “Norton Confidential has crashed”. The Norton toolbar disappears from this point onwards.

Salihb, as you point out, Norton Confidential is still usable. If I log out of Gmail, the Identity Safe once again works as expected but crashes once I have logged back into my Gmail account. The toolbar is visible during normal browsing.

I have SSL encryption enabled for Gmail (https) but I can log into another online news account without issue (that site does not use SSL (https)).

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit with SP1. I also have Office 2010 SP1 64 bit and Adobe Reader 10.1.4 installed. I have enabled Microsoft EMET v3.0 (all mitigations: DEP, SEHOP, NullPage, HeapSpray, EAF, Mandatory ASLR and BottomUpASLR) on chrome.exe and on googletalkplugin.exe

@Norton: If you require any further information, please let me know. I am available to assist in any way that is necessary.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

I too have been facing the same problem of Norton Confidential crashing in Google Chrome browser ever since it got updated automatically to version 21.0..1180.79m yesterday evening. The same is working fine in IE9 and Firefox 14.0.1. My NIS 2012 is also updated to the latest version, i.e. 19.8.0.14 today. Also updated all critical patches from Microsoft thru Windows Update yesterday on my Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 based system.

I don't use Norton ID Safe though the toolbar is active on all my browser. Hope Norton IS team resolves this issue asap.

Regards,

Ramesh

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

I'm having the same problem with Chrome since updating NIS to 19.8.0.14. I am getting the message, "Norton Confidential has crashed."

Google Chrome 21.0.1180.79 m

Windows 7 64-bit SP1 with latest updates

Norton Internet Security 19.8.0.14

I do have a number of extensions, but had no trouble before the latest NIS update.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Thanks for letting us know about this problem. It sounds very similar to this ongoing issue, and has been logged with Google Chrome. It's likely to be a correlation rather than a causation, as this issue has been occurring for several months now. Let me know if you think otherwise -- that this issue is different than the one linked above -- with any details that might help us differentiate them. Thanks.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

It might be a related issue, but I remind you that it did not begin to occur until the latest NIS update... and began immediately upon updating.  The message to which you refer solves the problem by disabling an NIS feature. This is not a great marketing strategy.  If I were Symantec, I'd sure be curious as to what change in the update created the issue.

Hi Tony,

Thanks very much for providing the link to this issue. It appears to be the same issue but as mkeaster pointed out above, I also only begun experiencing this issue when the 19.8.0.14 update for Internet Security 2012 was installed earlier today. I was using the same version of Chrome yesterday with version 19.7.1.5 of Internet Security 2012 and the Norton Confidential plugin was working as intended.

It is good to know that it is Google’s browser at fault and it would be great if they could prioritize a resolution for this issue after all this time. For me this issue is more of an annoyance rather than an issue that breaks functionality so I am more than willing to wait on a fix.

Thank you again for this information.

Re: Norton Confidential crashing after update (chrome)

Tony,

Although I do believe this is the same issue, I also agree with others that the latest NIS update has made things worse.  Rather than occassionally seeing Norton Confidential crash, it happens all the time.  Also, my Google+ basically stopped working... I wasn't able to click on any links, getting only the "Loading..." message if I did.  Disabling Norton Confidential resolved these issues, but it is only a workaround.

As others have suggested, Symantec really needs to up their game on this ... the last post from Google (if that bug report is indeed the only reason the plugin doesn't work properly) was over 3 months ago.  Either get Google to fix it, or change the plugin so it works with Chrome ... personally, I don't feel very safe with Norton Confidential disabled. A clear explanation from Symantec as to what this feature actually does (or is supposed to do) in Chrome would be helpful.

I find it shameful that two companies the size of Google and Symantec have let this major flaw go unchecked for a year now.  (according to what people have been reporting in the other thread you mentioned, although I didn't notice it until just recently)

Thanks,

Kurosh
