And how does that help ?

Let's not forget the arogance and hubris displayed by marking this forum question as "SOLVED" with a wingeing explanation that "it's not our fault" and "what can we do?".
This problem is NOT solved.

Exactly!!!
The problem is not solved, and we, paying customers still absolutely suffer from this continued arrogance displayed by Norton.
There is no excuse for this.
None.

Let me see if I understand this correctly.
A Norton employee has stated that the source of the problem is Chrome. That same employee has also stated that Google has been notified of the problem and the cause. The third statement is that Google has failed to correct their problem.
Now, how is Norton at fault?

The crash doesn't just happen with Chrome - it also crashes with IE!

The crashing is happening constantly with me - but it is not just Chrome, it happens with IE as well!

The extension cannot be turned off. I've done this multiple times, but it continually reasserts itself. So stop acting like a know-it-all, CAP52, when clearly you don't.
I am calling Norton tech support right now. Hopefully I will be supplied with a solution that will help us.

I've been getting the same problem too. Previously it was a rare occurance (but still a problem that it occurred at all) where the plugin would crash and freeze my browser, but of the last few weeks, it occurs multiple times a day and freezes my entire browser. It even freezes my entire browser for 10 seconds when I open a new page. I don't think this is a reasonable expectation of performance.
It doesn't occur on one specific website or anything like that, so it just seems like a problem with the plugin.
It doesn't seem reasonable to expect a commonly-used browser's support team to have to make themselves compatible with your software, rather than trying to make your software compatible with the commonly used browser. Would a software company contact Microsoft and ask them to make Windows 7 compatible with their software?
Come on, Norton. My entire family's been using Norton since forever, but this is pretty disappointing.
I was surprised when looking for a solution online that this issue has been ongoing since at least 2011 and is still not resolved!

Actually, Microsoft does release Application Compatibility Updates for their operating systems, such as this one:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B97
In regards to the Chrome situation, however, it seems to be more than just a simple compatibility issue. There is apparently a defect in the browser itself. Certainly, we can hope that Symantec might fashion a workaround - but that may not even be possible, and the real solution ultimately lies in Google correcting the flaw in their software that is the source of the problem.

I just "spoke" with support and this is what I was told:
Agent: Hi Sheila, I can help you with this issue. May I know if you use Norton Toolbar on Google Chrome?
Me: Yes to both
Agent: May I know if you use Norton Identity Safe feature to autofill the logins?
Me: No I don't
Agent: Okay. So you can disable Norton toolbar from Google Chrome and this issue will be resolved. You will not get the Norton Confidential crash. Norton Confidential is the old name of Norton Identity Safe, which is not much in use now. You can disable Norton Toolbar from Google Chrome if you are not using Norton Identity Safe feature.
Me: Wow - that easy huh? LOL Ok
Agent: Yes, it is. Sorry that it caused trouble for you. You just need to disable Norton Toolbar from the Google Chrome.
