Re: Norton Confidential plug-in crashing Chrome

[ Edited ]

Hi nealfjr,

I always advise people to do their own research - look at reviews and independent tests for yourself.  Recently, I saw someone post a recommendation here on the Norton forums for a well-known product that had actually just failed to retain its certification by one of the testing labs.  For me, touting a direct competitor's product on a forum that is provided by, and for, Norton raises some concerns about objectivity, anyway.  What have you always been told about the stuff you read on the internet?

@Sendofjive (Norton Fighter)  -  Thank you for your reply and advice.  as in my original post, i am not very intelligent when it comes to knowledge of computers or programs.   i was replying to a reply or something like that but i really like Norton.   as long as it protects me from all those viruses and stuff out there i am very happy.  in addition to all the other things it does.  i just like seeing those green words "Protected".

Re: Norton Confidential plug-in crashing NIS 2012

still there in Chrome and IE9. I dropped Norton a few years ago because of issues, came back to Norton about a year or so ago and in last 2 weeks or so have had this problem. Shan't be renewing as your products seem so buggy

Re: Norton Confidential plug-in crashing Chrome

The problem is not Norton's, it is Chrome's.  Norton Confidential has been renamed to Norton Identity Protection (check coieplg.dll, properties, details).  If you use Norton Identity protection this fix may or may not affect it's function.  You will have to test it out.

Here's the fix:

Click on wrench icon, upper right hand corner of Chrome page

Click on settings

Scroll to bottom of page and click on show advanced settings

Go to Privacy, content settings, plug-ins, disable individual plug-ins, disable Norton Confidential

Haven't gotten the error message since.

Have  a nice day.

Re: Norton Confidential plug-in crashing Chrome

I followed the instructions, and now all of a sudden my Norton Auto-fill for my log-ins will not work, even though it's set to automatically fill in my log-ins.

I cannot find what is wrong, and this is the MOST important tool for me (along with saving my credit card info.).

Help?

I followed your instructions to the letter.

*sigh*

Re: Norton Confidential plug-in crashing Chrome

If you read my post again, I mentioned the fact that Norton Identity Protection might not function properly with this fix.  I do not use this Norton feature so this fix works fine for me.

Since you do need NIP just go back and enable Norton Confiidential.  Same steps, just enable it.  You will probably, then,  keep getting the NIP error message.

Keep your fingers crossed that either Norton or Chrome will resolve this ongoing problem.

Just out of curiosity, did you get rid of the error message after applying the fix?

Re: Norton Confidential plug-in crashing Chrome

Thank You for posting all of your suggestions, patrick399!!!

I now have my NIP back, and my computer is back to running like sludge.  Yes, I think it was running smoother when I disabled it, but why, oh, why does it have to totally defeat my purpose for using Symantec?

I don't know if it cleared up the problem or not because I wasn't using long enough to test it thoroughly.  Many times I've thought the crashing and burning was taken care of, only to learn that after enough time (10 min. - a couple of days) it hadn't been fixed.

Thank You, maestro/doctor/magician/logician!

Re: Norton Confidential plug-in crashing Chrome

If NIP is important to you, but getting frustrated with it, there are alternatives to it.  Do some research and I am sure you can find some free apps that will do the same thing ,credit card info, etc, that NIP does.  I would strongly recommend this alternatives just to alleviate all the frustration.

Good luck...
