Norton for Mac

I keep being advised when starting up taht Norton Utitlies has detected a new version of MacOS  and that I may need to update my installed Norton Utitiles. Trouble is I can't locate which version of Norton Utilities is installed. It doesn't appear on the norton quick menu. Can anyone advise what I should do to up date and get rid of this message?

Hi Rober_SK,

To find the version of NUM your are using you should launch NUM and select the About... menu (top left of menu bar). If for some reason NUM will not launch, you can also Get Info on the application within /Applications/Symantec Solutions/Norton Utilities. Just select that item and hit keystroke Command + the "I" key. This will product a Get Info window and there in should be the product version.

Can you please tell me what OSX version you are currently running?

sorry, I must correct myself. The path where you'll find the Norton Utilities application is /Applications/Norton Utilities/. Also, if you don't want to deal with any "fancy" keystroks to Get Info on the app, and you're unable to launch NUM, you can use the Get Info option at the File menu.

Hi David, I do not seem to have any inclusion of Norton Utiities in either Symantec Solution or Norton. Also I get an update error when  Live Update tries to update. Robert

If you are not using any other Norton products, you can remove Norton Utiliites by using the tool found here:

    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/tools/mactools/RemoveSymantecMacFiles.zip

This assumes you don't want to keep NUM, which is apparently only partly installed.  It doesn't work on any OS after 10.3 (you didn't mention what OS version you are using).  If you have other Norton products (NAV or NIS), you could still use the above, but you would need to reinstall the others after doing the removal (so make sure you have the CDs or disk images).

Hi, many thanks for your useful information. I am using MacOS 10.5.8 so NUM will not run under this OS. I am also using Anti Virus and Internet Security so I will have to check that I can install them when I delete NUM.  regards,Robert

FYI, AntivVirus is part of Internet Security so you really only need the installer for the latter.  If you can't find it, let me know, we may be able to determine a way to remove just the leftover NUM portion. (but since it's old it would require some research)

Hi, many thanks for your help. I have followed your advice and cleared all old Norton files out using the software suggested and reinstalled Internet security successfully. Again many thanks for our help. R
