LiveUpdate Lacking Bang for-the Buck, Maybe?

[At-first I feel Happy to have saved what I wrote. My session here at Norton's Discussion Board logged me off, without warning! Here I wrote: ] Hello, Norton Community. I _still_ use a Power Macintosh G4, with its comfortable 640 MB of RAM. [As a-little aside, please tell me this: "Why should I upgrade? I'm comfortable with my Mac G4." Upgrade, Upgrade, Upgrade ... endlessly, it seems. My money is too hard-won to dispose-with so readily.] Onto my Subject. Today, which is 16 January, I used LiveUpdate v3.5 (049). It _claims_ to have found a-whopping 51.1 MB of New Virus Definitions. (51.1 MB is Hefty, yes?) But when I started Norton Antivirus v10.1.2 (001), I was told under Virus Definitions Info that the Total Virus Definitions didn't increase by one, even. The Total Virus Definitions stayed pegged at 75,939, solidly! (Please remember that this happened _after_ a 51.1 MB download. Yes, I keep a record of the Number of Viruses about-which Norton knows!) As a-result I feel that Norton Antivirus v10.1.2 (001) is screwy! Is there an explanation of this behavior that I cannot guess? What is happening, please? Thank you.

Re: LiveUpdate Lacking Bang for-the Buck, Maybe?

I won't rule out that there is a problem with NAV 10.1.2 failing to report the number of viruses correctly (but if so, since NAV 10 has been sunsetted, it won't be a problem that gets addressed).  Another explanation is that the update contained only new strains of existing definitions, since strains are not included in the count.

If you want, you could try deleting the existing Engine and Hub folders to see if a new update changes the total number, in case for some reason it is just downloading the same version or failing to load a new one.  Offhand I don't recall where those folders are located in that version, somewhere within /Library/Application Support.  If you want to try that and can't find them, I can try to find out the exact location.

Re: LiveUpdate Lacking Bang for-the Buck, Maybe?

Thank you at answering, Lee_G. I tell you how I feel: "Norton Antivirus v10.3.7 _soon_ has the Sun Set on it so-that LiveUpdate will stop working sometime within the next year, I think." So I will wait awhile to upgrade my _whole_ system to another brand-new Mac. Sorry, Barack: No Stimulus from me! Good News is that over several years, a-few versions of Norton Antivirus has _never_ found a problem. But I feel more-secure at owning a-copy of Norton Antivirus. Thank you much, Lee_G! :-)
