NIS for Mac apparently not set up correctly/not scanning

When I open the Norton Internet Security window, Statistics show last virus scan performed Dec 5, 2011, and Days left in trial as Unknown.  When I click Quick Scan, I get a message "The scan failed because of a scan engine problem.  Run LiveUpdate to get the latest version.  The basic NIS window shows "LiveUpdate occurred, Today at 3:06 AM."  Attempting to run LiveUpdate again, to comply with the error message, nets no new downloads.  Trying to run a Quick Scan again results in the same error message.  I have an order confirmation email from Symantec.  It appears that Live Update is working fine, but scans are not.  What is wrong with my setup?  What do I need to do to fix this?  I am running Lion.

Re: NIS for Mac apparently not set up correctly/not scanning

Just to double-check, your NIS is version 5, right?

It sounds like your product is not activated (or has deactivated itself).  When activated, the About pane should say "Days left in subscription," not "Days left in trial."

Please try using the Activate Now option, and (re-)entering the activation key.

Re: NIS for Mac apparently not set up correctly/not scanning

Thanks karigane for your answer.  Actually, I would LOVE to try an Activate Now option, but I can't find one.  I also cannot find my NIS version, because there doesn't seem to be anywhere to open NIS itself.  My menubar choices for Norton are LiveUpdate, Norton AntiVirus, Norton Firewall, Norton Identity, and Norton QuickMenu.  When I choose any of those choices, none shows an Activate Now menu item or button on the screen for activating, and none shows an about box for Norton Internet Security.  Actually, it is worse than that; trying to open Norton Firewall generates an error "Could not communicate with Norton Firewall".

I can say that the order confirmation email specifies Norton Internet Security 5 for Mac.

I certainly did not activate within the time period allowed (since I bought this in October), but I don't see how to fix it now.

Thx
