I just updated from Ghost 12 to Ghost 15. I noticed that in Destination Management screen, none of my previous backups show up. I have not run a new backup yet. Can 15 manage 12's sets, or will I have to manually delete the files using Explorer when I need the space?

Since version 14 Ghost uses a different backup mechanism/file tpye, and because of this, old backups are not readable by the new versions.

If I remember well, Ghost 12 used the .gho filetypes, what is readable by the Ghost Explorer, what you can download from here: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/products/ghost/utilities/GHO_Explorer.exe

G12 used v2i and iv2i files.

Your right about the files Andy.

Yes, Ghost 15 is fully compatible with the version 12 files.

However, Ghost 15 for some silly reason has no way to add images into the history.  I spent considerable time myself trying to do it.  So your also correct that you will have to manually remove them when you need to get rid of them.

It's not a big deal, as I can manually delete them if needed. I assume since it can't "see" them, when I do my backup this weekend (I'm configured for quarterly base creation), it will create a new base backup.

I'm not sure what you got going on now.

But since the new version can't "see" the old ones it's definatly not going to make incrementals off them or use the old base if thats what you mean.

If you upgraded Ghost since your last base, then yes you will have to let it make a new base to start from.

Something still seems messed up. I made a new 'base' backup (about 114G used on drive resulting in a 98G 'high compression' backup!!!) Still, when I go to Manage Destination drive, it shows NOTHING! I can use the recovery browser and see everything, but why can't I manage the drive through Ghost?

I recently updated from Ghost 12 to Ghost 15. On the update, I told it to remember the old settings and files.

Since that update, the 'Manage Backup Destination' utility shows no restore points. This is despite doing a new base and incremental since the update. I even did a 'One Time Backup' of my D: (Vista recovery partition), and it doesn't show up, either. Tasks/Settings does show 39M for file and folder storage, which was a test I did to see if anything would be recognized, but shows 0 for recovery point storage. All backups are to the exact same drive and directory as before. Backup History shows all previous backups, including those I made in Ghost 12.

This is using 32-bit Vista to an external USB drive. The drive is normally turned off except when I want to make backups. I even rebooted with it turned on, but it still shows no restore points. Recovery Point Browser works fine and shows all backups, including the Ghost 12 backups.

Although this isn't a killer issue, it does make it impossible for me to save space and consolidate increments from my previous quarter. It is set up for quarterly base backups, and I manually run the back up weekly.

This is getting weirder. I manually deleted my oldest base and a matching consolidated incremental. When I started Ghost and went to the Destination manager it said they had been deleted and asked if I wanted to remove them from History! Still, the manager itself lists nothing!

Unfortunately PapauZ is incorrect about the format.  Ghost has used .v2i since Ghost 9.  Ghost 2003 and earlier used the .GHO format. 

As to why the management UI isn't showing the list of backups, this is based on history.  Since you haven't run a backup with Ghost 15 there's nothing in the history to display.  Once you create a backup with 15 you'll begin to see this.  For unmanaged backups you can directly inspect the backup location for these to see the .v2i files that are present there. 

Ways that you can end up with unmanaged images:

deleting .pqh files

renaming an image on disk

moving an image outside of Ghost

etc
