Disastrous Ghost 15 Install/Uninstall Issues

[ Edited ]

I've spent far more time in trying to get this to work than the product costs, probably about 8 hours now, so I am definitely not a satisfied customer.  I have been using Ghost 2003 (cold version only) for many years prior, and finally bought 15 for its advertised "New" cold imaging (which it really doesn't do, and it's not new, but that's another story).

Anyway, initially I clicked the install options to not install all the services and remote agents and such since I had no intent on using them.  The only reason I installed it at all was to create a recovery CD with the product key built in and possibly fiddle with some other options.  Apparently, however, there is no LiveUpdate and no registration capability unless you install everthing.

So, I go to install the missing components, and now, all I get on installing is: "Please insert the disk: 1" in an endless do loop.  If I cancel out, it rolls back the changes, so I cannot finish installing.

So, if I go to uninstall, it also aborts with multiple "ERROR: Failed to have success running UninstallDriver function in MSIUninstallDriver Function." messages, then rolls back the changes.  A good possibility for it failing is because these services/drivers were never installed in the first place.

Finally, I tried installing the SP1 trial over the initial version, hoping it would add/update whatever was missing.  Unfortunately, it aborts with "Error 1720. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run.  Contact your support personnel or packge vendor.  Custom action UninstallGenericMountDriver.B24ECCE6_686C_4EE4..."

So, I cannot install the product.  I cannot uninstall the product.  I cannot upgrade the product.  I cannot run LiveUpdate.  I have surfed and tried every related suggestion that I found including things like SYMCLEAN.  If I have to resort to going back to a Ghost 2003 image to fix my PC, then there is no way I'm going to buy this software for any other machines.

BTW, it is Vista Ultimate 32-bit.  I did not have Ghost 2003 installed for the above initially stated reasons.  It did, however, have the Ghost Explorer utility associated to .gho files. After the various install/uninstall/upgrate attempts, it is still in "limbo", however there are now no files (not even the browser, etc.) from the first installtion.  Multiple reboots in between also tried.

Hi meekola

Welcome to the Norton Community Forums

If Norton Ghost is the only Norton product on your system you could try cleaning up by running the Norton Removal Tool that you can download from here.

Re: Disastrous Ghost 15 Install/Uninstall Issues

Sweet! I don't know why that little jewel was so well hidden. Considering that I only had Ghost (sort of) installed, that was perfect solution. This time, I installed everything except for the remote agent and instead started with the Trial which was SP1. Everything seems to be loading so far, and I just burned a recovery DVD. It'll be interesting to see if that loads any faster than the retail CD. In closing, I consider this Norton Removal Tool an essential workaround to a sloppy installer. Thanks a BUNCH!
