E4bc0012 - database locked

Hi

I am running ghost 14. I have 4 backup tasks. I keep getting the above error for one of the tasks. I have tried the services->stop Ghost->delete the catalog.dat-> restart Ghost and try again routine about 5 times. And no joy. The other tasks back up fine.

I figured I would delete that task and re-create it, as a last resort. I say this because it would then leave a load of files on my external hard drive.

Is there anything else I can try to get this task to work? I have run this task several times before, but it just wont do it now!

Re: E4bc0012 - database locked

Hi maxellcat, are there any other error codes along with this one? All warnings and error messages are reported by Ghost to the Windows Event log. Could you look at the application event logs and check for any warnings/errors from Ghost, Ghost Service, V2i, Volume Shadow Copy Service, etc?  Please include the whole error code text, as it may provide more info as to the cause.

What are the 4 backup tasks? Are they all scheduled? Are they file and folder backups, full disk backups, incremental backups? When are each scheduled? Which exact version of Norton Ghost 14 are you using?  Have you run LiveUpdate in Ghost until there are no more updates? Which operating system are you using, and how is it partitioned? I'm sorry for the questions; without having your system in front of me, this information is critical to finding the cause. Thanks!

Re: E4bc0012 - database locked

Thanks for your very thorough reply - I will attempt to be as full in my reply! I am running xp pro, and am doing my backups to an external hard drive (f), which is often not connected to the laptop. I have Ghost 14.0.4.30167. I wasn't aware I could update, and will certainly do this (but haven't as yet). I have one full hd backup, which I try to run weekly. I beleive it is incremental. I then have 3 folder jobs, that I do for "belt and braces" - these are called "flash dev", "clients" and "websites". Again, I believe these are incremental. (slighly confused on this point to be honest...). All the tasks are scheduled, but they are usually run manually. All are scheduled to run on satruday, two at the same time. I have had this problem with all of the jobs, at different times. Sometimes 1 or 2 will run, but the 3rd wont. Usually (but not alwasy) the full disc backup is ok. I can't seem to find a pattern. Sometimes the deletion of the .cat file works (but not always). There is one folder (websites) that I have tried 5-10 times to back up over the last 2 weeks. Amazinly it did it yesterday. I don't know what I did that was different from anyother time!!! I am wondering if there is something wrong I am doing in the way I disconnect/connect the external hard drive - just on a usb, but I have no particular approach to this - ie sometimes its on before I connect it and someitmes it isn't. I usually just turn the laptop off, and then the hard drive once the laptop is off. I have copied 3 events from the log - could only find logs for "Norton Ghost" Event Type: Error Event Source: Norton Ghost Event Category: High Priority Event ID: 100 Date: 19/06/2009 Time: 21:31:10 User: N/A Computer: LAPTOP Description: Error EC8F1C50: Cannot create file backup for job: sites3. Sorry for the delay - from the error messages you posted, there are some other people experiencing the same problem. You may want to review this thread and apply some of the fixes:

Re: E4bc0012 - database locked

This could be due to conflict between the VSS Writer services.

I would suggest you to do the following:

• Check and permanently disable the SQL Server VSS Writer service if found.

• Stop the Norton Ghost service.

• Delete the Catalog.dat file.

• Restart the Norton Ghost service.

• Run backup.

Re: E4bc0012 - database locked

Thank your for your reply.

I checked the services and SQL Server VSS Writer has "Startup Type" as disabled.

So I suppose that's not the problem???

But thanks for helping - its just so annoying. Last night I went to back up some files. I have 3 backup jobs.

First one worked a treat. Went to do the second, and after 20 minutes of so "database locked"....

Re: E4bc0012 - database locked

Me again

have also noticed that when doing folder backups the "performance slider is disabled...."  - is that correct

and that when I was in manage my disc space it took about 10 minutes before I could do anything as my external HD whirred away. I then noticed that apparently the size of my recovery point was about 50 Gb - ie what i would expect, but the size of the folder backups was 0!!! Despite there being lots of folders inside the backup folder

Something is wrong

Please help!
