Re: Getting rid of Norton Security Scan

Just using Add/Remove did not work.  Just using the Norton Removal Tool did not work.  But when I used EasyCleaner to remove the software and THEN used the NRT (even though it already should have been gone) I was finally able to boot without Norton Security Scan re-installing on my computer.

I had previously removed the GoogleUpdater with no effect.

While I thank you all for trying to help with this matter, I feel I must express my extreme displeasure with Symantec/Norton.  I can't believe a reputable company like yours would A) allow one of their products to be installed unknowingly on people's computers and B) would make that software exceedingly difficult to remove (an "Uninstall" option in the NSS folder would have been very desirable).

I'm a PC tech and I'm extremely picky about what I allow onto any of my computers.  I guarantee no other software asked my permission to install NSS because I would have declined, and I ALWAYS look out for "add-on" software when installing anything new.

While I do not use Norton's security products, I have used other Symantec products on other computers (not the one I had this problem with).  In my opinion, the trojan horse-like nature of Norton Security Scan is a major black eye for Norton and Symantec.

Re: Getting rid of Norton Security Scan

I've got to agree with the previous poster.  I am STILL unable to prevent Norton Security Scan from installing over and over.  I've traced it down to somehow being linked to Firefox, as it only installs when I start Firefox.  But I do not have Googlepack installed, and never have.  I've tried the NRT, I've tried EasyCleaner, I've tried Add/Remove Programs from Vista, but nothing seems to work.  I've deleted the Common Files folder, but the install.exe file "self generates" and gets back in.  I will NEVER buy another Norton product, as it now REFUSES to stay off my computer.

Re: Getting rid of Norton Security Scan

Having same problem.  My copy came from the Shockwave update.  Revo Uninstaller wasn't able to stop it NSS from reinstalling itself (after restarting the computer).

Re: Getting rid of Norton Security Scan

You should be able to simply remove NSS by deleting the NSS folder (i.e. Program Files\Norton Security Scan) and delete the scheduled scan in the Windows Scheduler (Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks).  NSS by itself doesn’t re-install itself; if it comes back after you have deleted both the NSS folder and the NSS scheduled scan, then something else is installing it (i.e. Adobe’s Shockwave installer or Google’s Pack). Can you verify that this is the case?

Thanks,

Re: Getting rid of Norton Security Scan

The NRT (Norton Removal Tool) was able to remove this on my computer, and NSS has not reinstalled itself since then.

Re: Getting rid of Norton Security Scan

After having NSS reappear after an uninstall/reinstall of Firefox, I traced it to Shockwave.  I don't know what kind of pull you have with the folks who are working with Adobe to have NSS installed, but I didn't get an opt-out option for NSS until I did the manual install.  Automatic installs, with the check box marked to install NSS selected by default, includes NSS and puts the "hooks" in place that even if you do the Add/Remove of NSS, it stays.  PLEASE, have NSS changed to opt-in, or at least have the Adobe folks change the way the install goes so that the option to install or not install NSS is given whether its manual or via visiting the web page.

Uninstalling Shockwave 11, then reinstalling it with the NSS option unchecked did.

Didn't read this before doing so so I can only make an assumption that it was something with the Shockwave 11 install that was causing the hidden reinstall of NSS after removing/restarting computer.

..Oh, and the NRT didn't work for me incase anyone was wondering.

Re: Getting rid of Norton Security Scan

After some research, it has been discovered that this issue is actually a defect in NSS, and not a fault of its design. The reason why the uninstall is not happening is because the NSS install stub is being left behind. So when NSS gets uninstalled, NSSstub says "oops, no NSS here ... I better install it!"

Until a fix can be put in place the, the temporary solution is as follows:

(Note: These steps are for XP and there may be slight differences for Vista.)

Uninstall NSS via Add/Remove programs.

Delete the NSSStub.exe from the scheduled tasks
Start -> Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks
        Delete the NSS Scheduled Task

Delete the NSS RunOnce registry key.

   Start -> Run -> type "regedt32"
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
         Software
           Microsoft
              Windows
                CurrentVersion
                   RunOnce

Delete the NSS registry key.(I am not sure the exact name of the key, but it should have NSS in the name.) Users need to be careful when accessing the registry and you may want to save a backup of the registry prior to changing it, just in case.

Once you do the above, NSS will not try to reinstall itself.

I hope this helps.

Re: Getting rid of Norton Security Scan

Mr Coleman,

I do not have a registry key as you have described.  Any other suggestions?

BTW, I am experiencing the same problems as previously mentioned.

Thank you.

Re: Getting rid of Norton Security Scan

Hi Rusty,

I just want to clarify before I ask my sources for other ideas they may have. Are you saying you have:

Uninstalled NSS via Add/Remove programs.

And deleted the NSSStub.exe from the scheduled tasks
Start -> Control Panel -> Scheduled Tasks
        Delete the NSS Scheduled Task

But you can not delete the NSS RunOnce registry key, because you can't find it?
   Start -> Run -> type "regedt32"
       HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
         Software
           Microsoft
              Windows
                CurrentVersion
                   RunOnce

And NSS keeps reinstalling itself after doing the above?

Let me know. Thanks!
