UBCD For Win is an incredible tool  I have built some custom disks for all my systems and some of my friends and it's amazing for what you can do with them.

Once I had a bad hard drive and my wife and I used a disk I made for a couple days until I could get around to fixing the system.

But I wouldn't compare it to a standard PE disk, or windows installation disk.  Just because a system can boot that CD doesn't mean that it can correctly boot all CD's.

Try making a windows 7 startup repair disk, that will tell you right of the bat if the system can boot a CD or not.

If you can't get to that last screen the system has a hardware or BIOS problem or incorrect setting.

Another thing to try would be to make a bootable flash drive.

Use a windows 7 system, put in a flash drive that you don't need anything on it (you will loose all the data on it).

Open disk management and make a note of the Disk Number.

Close disk management and open a command prompt as an Administrator.

Run diskpart and in the step "list disk" verify by the sizes that the flash drive is the same disk number you noted above.

Make sure your positive you have the right disk (the flash drive) before you clean the drive.

Then go through the rest of the steps and then copy the entire contents of the recovery disk onto the flash drive.

Test the flash drive on your system first to verify it boots and then try it on the laptop.

Thanks for the suggestions.  We'll give them a try.

I have created a bootable SRD USB flash drive and successfully tested it on my notebook.  I'm mailing it to him today, and I will also help him create a Windows 7 repair disk to test that.

I will let you know the results, though it may be several days yet.

We have new information.  We booted the notebook with a Windows 7 installation disk.  It booted fine.  We booted it with a Vista installation disk.  It would not boot.  We saw the same problem as we are having with the Ghost SRD.  It starts with the Loading Files screen, then goes black and stays that way.

We then tried booting with a bootable USB flash drive that I created per your suggestion.  I made a bootable flash drive on a Windows 7 PC, then copied the contents of an existing SRD onto it.  It booted my notebook properly, but when we tried booting the notebook in question with it, we had the same problem.

This seems to indicate this notebook cannot boot with Vista.  I don't yet know why that would be, but I will research it.  The flash drive was created on a Windows 7 machine, but then files from the SRD were written to it, so is there some Vista-specific file on the SRD?

Any thoughts?

I looked at the support site and I find it interesting that all the drivers availible are only for XP or Windows 7.

Nothing for Vista.

The manual however says "XP-Vista-Win7" but it's in an exe format that I don't want to install.  (I can't extract it).

Have you looked in the manual or other support documents to see if Vista is supported?

Maybe there is some setting that needs to be changed in the BIOS for Vista or something?

edit - BTW it looks like it uses the standard Intel SATA driver, but it sure seems like the issue is the operating system and not the driver. (The OS on the ecovery disk).

Which driver are you trying to extract?

I was trying to read the manual, it's a exe made by installshield or something.

I didn't want to install it and my test system is down at the moment.

I got the f-ing thing stuck in my recycle bin now and I can't reboot till I'm ready to leave work.

I ran the "exe" Samsung user manual.  

Pros: It displays the manual in a very readable on-screen format.  Bright easy-to-read book-like pages in large fonts.

Cons: For our purposes, no useful information.  It's the basic "how to use your new computer" stuff.  The only thing it has about the BIOS setup is how to get to it and a listing and very brief description of each category within.  Just one page and no details about individual settings.

The references to Vista just dealt wtih differences in Windows between Win 7 and Vista.

I've downloaded the WAIK files and the batch file for creating a Win PE 3.1 version of the SRD.  I'll give that a go.

I also plan to have my user try setting his BIOS back to Deafult Settings.  Maybe it's that simple.

I was hoping it gave instructions on how to install Vista.

If that model laptop is unable to boot a Vista disk using the default settings you would think something would be in the manual or the FAQ's.
