Re: Ghost 15 Copy Drive Failure

Brian,

I thought that is what I am showing in message 57, for example when the copy of C: is completed I have to exit Ghost and go into disk management to get the drive online so that Ghost can "see" the unallocated space.

Also I make sure that the drive letter created by windows in the newly created partition is removed, then I can open Ghost again and copy D: as message 57.

I might be a bit thick, a disk signature is what exactly if it is not a drive letter?

Before the process starts I open Ghost and it can see all the unallocated space 152.67 GB in the target drive.

Brian,

I have re-imaged the 120 gig "clone" now and all is well with it, works perfect until I try a "copy drive" again.

If you tell me exactly what to do before I try a "copy drive" to D: I will give it another go

I have just looked it up about a disk signature and it is a 4 byte identifier, that doesn't make much sense to me 'cos I haven't a clue how to change the identifier if it clashes.

Edit,   I think we are getting a bit closer to the root of this problem Brian.

Re: Ghost 15 Copy Drive Failure

Deric,

I have information overload with your posts. But...

You must Restart the computer after bringing the HD Online. It won't work properly until you do this.

See this page about Disk and Partition signatures. It's the best info I've seen. Dan Goodell knows his stuff.

Re: Ghost 15 Copy Drive Failure

Brian,

Sorry about the overload, I will have a go at it again tomorrow afternoon and restart after each partition is copied.

One more try and that is it, I give up.

No, you only have to restart once.

Make the disk Online. Restart. Then open Ghost.

Edit... when you bring the disk Online, Windows changes the Disk Signature. The restart makes the new Disk Signature permanent.

Deric, how did you rename the entries in the boot menu so you can tell them apart?

I would guess EasyBCD?

I seem to be having some trouble with them and I have not even installed Ghost yet.

I have installed the following:

C =Windows XP

D =Vista

E =Windows 7 Home Premium

F = Windows 7 Pro

(Letters are always the same way regardless of what OS I boot to)

By default the Vista/7 boot loader changes XP into "previous operating system" and it only lists Windows 7 for the last 2.

It also puts them in reverse order with the most recent OS on top.

I'm trying to rename the 2 windows 7 entries to Home and Pro so I can tell them apart and reverse the order so they display like I listed them above but I keep ending up with an extra XP entry that does not show in EasyBCD and the windows 7 pro entry has "disappeared" twice so far.

Dave

Edit- Ignore me if thats part of the problem.

I haven't asked you or Brian what you found or how you fixed it because I wanted to try to reproduce the problem.

I'll go ahead and install another hard drive and Ghost and see if I can image everything before the entry disapears again.

Both entries for XP I have work BTW

Re: Ghost 15 Copy Drive Failure

Dave,

To get rid of the extra entry in XP I right click computer icon, properties, advanced, startup and edit.

As you know that is bootini.exe, opens in notepad and take out the line 2003 and save, that sorts that out.

You will find you will get the line previous operating system, I renamed that in Bootini if I remember.

It takes a while to sort out the menu but once done you should get the following menu:-

Windows XP Professional

Windows Vista

Windows 7 Home

Windows 7 Professional

The above menu can only be renamed in Easy BCD, that is how mine is displayed in the boot menu only I have Vista Ultimate and Win 7 (1) and Win 7 (2) professional.

The focus can also be changed in Easy BCD, move up button, but I am sure you know that.

Best of luck with your tests, at least we can pool information and experience.

At the end of the day G15 can backup a multi boot machine and re-image it, the problem is "cloning" and "copy drive" it is not as smart as Ghost 12.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to try G12 if you have got a copy just to prove what I have been saying all along.

G15 with recover all partitions by highlighting them when backing up and just select the recovery point to re-image and G15 will do it, you don't have to select one at a time.

But, Not on 4 separate drives you will only get XP and Win7 Pro, first and last (dual boot) if you see what I mean.

G15 will only work effectively on a Single drive partitioned into 4.

Brian,

sorry it didn't work, same problem as before so I don't need to go into detail.

Also I tried it with Ghost 12, that failed as well on a "copy my hard drive" option, and that did surprise me with Ghost 12.

The image/restore "clone" done with G12 still works well though.
