Re: Ghost 15, two problems: Clone drive can't boot, Data partition diappeared!

I thought this was interesting. After selecting delete volume I get this warning:Computer Management3.png

Re: Ghost 15, two problems: Clone drive can't boot, Data partition diappeared!

D drive is back!

Used EaseUs Partition Master and got it back. It gave me an error of 'cannot mount' but it still worked on the second try! Woo Hoo!

Next I am going to duplicate the D: drive to the OTHER 2 TB drive for safe keeping (it is about 200 GB of data and photos from the last 15 years), then format and clone C: onto F:.

Any suggestions?

Russell,

That's good news about the D: drive.

Just make a partition on your other HD and copy/paste your 200 GB of data.

Almost done,

Cloning my C drive to the 160 GB  drive is not working as I get this error, what am I doing wrong?

Re: Ghost 15, two problems: Clone drive can't boot, Data partition diappeared!

Try doing it without the option to make the drive active.

You will have to do a startup repair anyway, you could make the partition active later.

Your trying to go from a GPT to a MBR partition.  I have never seen anyone try this and I'm very curious if it will work.

It seems to me it should, even if it's not directly supported by Ghost.

Ghost should be able to copy over the partition, then you should be able to use the bootitNG disk to make the partition active and then boot to a startup repair disk to add the boot files.

Re: Ghost 15, two problems: Clone drive can't boot, Data partition diappeared!

I think the problem is GPT partitioning. Windows 7 claims full compatability but many tools in windows don't seem to know what to do with it or work irregularly. I can't get the repair my system to work on the Windows 7 disk, windows image won't work. Converted the 160 GB back to MBR (took about 1 second) now trying Ghost again: I did a one time backup of the C: drive with the 160 GB drive disconnected now I am going to shut down, disconnect C:, reconnect the 160 GB and try and restore with Ghost. We'll see....

Re: Ghost 15, two problems: Clone drive can't boot, Data partition diappeared!

GOT IT!

Yes, I had to use EaseUS Partition Master to change the 160 GB drive back to MBR, next I restarted with the old C: and D: drive (on the first 1 TB physical drive) which is now backed up. I deleted all partitions (I had to use EaseUS again as windows took it offline because of a signature conflict with the cloned 160 GB drive) and converted it to MBR (again with EaseUS) now I am moving all my data and backups onto the first 1 TB drive so I can convert the second 1 TB drive from GPT to MBR and use it as the mirror with Window's own tools.

With all this I only needed to use Ghost for one operation: copying the C: drive and restoring it to Another drive (Windows won't let you do this evidently, even with MBR disks) I guess that is why you buy Ghost!

I probably could have used Partition Magic  for the other stuff if I had it. I wish Ghost, Utilities and Partition Magic were on one disk!

I figured out the reason I had all disks as GPT: I originally was going to use this computer for a combo Mac/ Windows machine (Macs use GPT exclusively now). My wife kindly reminded me that I was building it for her, make it wife friendly! So out goes the Mac stuff (It really worked pretty good aside from a few glitches, iMovie and Garage Band are AWESOME with a Core i5 quad 3.1 GHz!)

SO REMEMBER KIDS: Just say no to GPT unless you run Mac OS or maybe Windows 8 or 9 or 17 or whatever Mr. Balmer wants to call the 'good' one! Not saying Windows 7 is bad, mind you...

Thanks all. I will mark this as solved when I get everything completed (I am typing this a little early as I still have some copy operations to finish but the rest is repeating what I have already done).

The sun is about to go down in Idaho, another wonderful day spent with Windows! ;oD

Re: Ghost 15, two problems: Clone drive can't boot, Data partition diappeared!

While my Mirrored Data drive 'Resyncs' (which will probably take all night) I have one nagging problem left after adding and removing drives all day:

Upon Startup I am left with a boot menu with four instances of Windows to choose from and only one (the first one fortunately) works. It is like Microsoft Russian Roulette Starting up this machine!

I have gone through this years ago once but can't remember, how do I get rid of the stinkin' boot menu?
