Ghost and use of 2nd PC

I have Ghost 10 and an XP PC. The image of my PC HD is stored on an external HD. I intend to purchase a second PC as a back up, so that if my present PC packs up I can download the data on my external HD onto my new PC........and carry on as normal.

Is there a problem with this idea.....either from a licence point of view...or technically? My new PC will probably have a VISTA operating system. Would this be a problem?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Ghost and use of 2nd PC

The new OS won't factor in here.  What would prevent you from using your current backup on your new PC is the fact that the image cannot be restore to dislike hardware.  If you were to restore on the new machine and the hardware is different you will most likely have an ubootable system.  If you have to fall back onto the new system, Ghost 10 will not be able to be installed on Vista as it's not supported.  You can install Ghost 12 or 14 (recommend 14) on the Vista system and can restore any data from your Ghost 10 backup.  You will not be able to use the image to restore applications though.  Did this answer your questions?

Re: Ghost and use of 2nd PC

I have a similar issue, my XP Pro laptop died and I want to restore the folders and files to an XP Pro desktop.

I purchased a separate copy of Ghost 14 and installed it on the desktop and moved my external harddrive to the desktop.

How do I get the Ghost 14 on the desktop to see the files on the external drive as backups?  I told Ghost 14 the external drive is the location for backups but it just sees a 300 Gigabyte disk with 285 Gigabytes used up.  It does not see the used space as backups.

Thanks.

Re: Ghost and use of 2nd PC

Are you going into the tasks to restore?  It sounds like you are trying to set up a new of backups.

Re: Ghost and use of 2nd PC

I have never used Ghost to recover files before - I cannot find a way to get it to recognize the recovery points on the external drive no matter what I do.  Tasks or otherwise.

How do I get Ghost to recognize recovery points created on a different computer so I can then search in them to recover files and folders?

Thanks.

Re: Ghost and use of 2nd PC

This does not work either, as Ghost has to be able to see the backups to search them for files and folders.

I found that the Recovery Point browser can be pointed to the actual backup file and this then sees the contents of it.  That will work.
