Ghost 15 backs up perfectly at 2:00am.
The backups are there on the external drive and open and work fine.
BUt when I go to open Ghost 15 the next morning it won't open.
It hangs at the end of the progress bar.
It always says something like destination not available.
I need to reboot every day or Ghost 15 doesn't open.
Win XP Pro, SP 3, 2 gigs ram
2 TB external WD "My Book" HDD.

Welcome to the forum. Is your Windows XP 32 or 64 bit? What is your full version of Ghost from Help > About?
If you do not have 18.104.22.168526 then please run Live Update and confirm the version after completion.
Did you have a previous version of Ghost before 15? What anti-virus software do you use?
Is your external drive a USB? What happens if you unplug it for a few seconds and plug it back in? Does this allow Ghost to complete loading up?

Yes, I had 14 but have reformatted since then.
Ghost doesn't complete loading up even after unpluging the USB hard drive. It takes a reboot.
I'm now trying a FireWire connection.

Thanks for the update. You mentioned unplugging the USB drive but just to make sure, are you just unplugging it? Or are you waiting several seconds and then plugging it back in? Sorry if you've already done this last part but I just want to make sure.
Basically I'm wondering if the USB drive is going into power save mode and then not waking up enough when you try to launch Ghost, thereby preventing Ghost from seeing the drive.

I'm actually unplugging the USB cable and leaving it unplugged. Ghost won't open.
Plugged it back in and Ghost won't open.
I've also tried turning off the external with it's switch. Ghost won't open.
Turned it back on and Ghost won't open.
In both cases I need to reboot.
Trying it now with Firewire. Won't know results until tomorrow am.

Thanks for the information. Try checking your BIOS settings and see if there are any relevant configuration options which might apply to USB devices.
It honestly does sound like the USB drive is not coming fully awake for Ghost to be able to recognize.
Do you only have the problem after it sitting idle overnight or for extended periods?
It will be interesting to see the results with a Firewire drive so I will look forward to those results.

Thanks for the update. It is good to hear that it works with Firewire for you. I can tell you from a generic sense that USB works and it is in fact one of the more popular backup drive types used with Ghost.
What type of USB drive is this? Is it one that came preloaded with other software? Is there software running in the background (apart from Ghost) which monitors or does anything with this drive?
I used to use an external USB drive as well until I switched to a larger internal RAID array. My USB drive came with a bunch of software preloaded on it and one of the first things I did was to format it clean. You might consider giving this a try on yours.
