Re: GoBack partitions...

I missed where you said you had the partition wizzard disk.

Give me about 20 minutes and I'll try it with that disk too.

Re: GoBack partitions...

I wouldn't use PW if I were you.  I tried it with the partition wizzard 7 boot CD and it kept hanging the system when I tried to change the partition type.  I use PW alot and it always worked for me, I think it's having problems because of GoBack.

I also think it's misidentifying the drive because it's taking way longer than normal to load.

GoBack does something strange to the drive, it appears to setup a virual RAID using the gobackio.bin file as the mirror drive.

But even after the nasty hangs I was able to boot to the Bootit NG disk and change the partition type and access the data without any problems.

I did make a mistake above, Bootit BM doesn't call NTFS an 07 or 0x07 partition, it calls it: 7/7h HPFS/NTFS

Re: GoBack partitions...

Dave, you said in your last msg: "

I did make a mistake above, Bootit BM doesn't call NTFS an 07 or 0x07 partition, it calls it: 7/7h HPFS/NTFS."

In the first sentence you referred to Bootit NG but in the second you referred to Bootit BM, which I think is the new version of Bootit NG. I made a Bootit NG disk which boots up in the second computer I was using with NGBboot.

You get 30 free trial wiht Bootit BM as well. Is there any advantage to using that instead of Bootit NG?

It seems like this process just changes the partition from GoBack to 0x07 & you eliminate the gobackio.bin as the final step. Is this true? Thanks for helping me with this!

Re: GoBack partitions...

Erik,

BIBM is the latest version but for what you are doing they are equivalent.

Re: GoBack partitions...

Hopefully this is the last question I will have to ask you. When I boot to the ngbboot disc, I hit enter on 1. It asked me if I wanted to continue, yes. Then the Norton screen comes up with the question: Do you want to remove GoBack from your computer. So far, I have not done this. Do you do this before using the bootitNG disk to change the partition type? When I go directly from the ngbboot disk to the bootitNG disk w/o doing the Norton removal stage, bootitNG comes up with the msg that GoBack is still there.

Thanks a bunch!

Re: GoBack partitions...

Yes, when you boot up with the ngbboot after you push 1 it loads another screen saying if you don't want to continue you should remove the disk and reboot.

At that screen push enter to continue.  Then it says "Unhooking GoBack"  leave it for a minute or 2 and then reboot to the same disk and choose option 2.

After option 2 has run, remove the CD and boot to the BootitBM or NG disk.

If you still get a warning about Goback, boot to the Windows 98 DOS CD and run:  fdisk /mbr

Then try the Bootit disk again and the warning about GoBack should be gone.

If you use the DOS disk, don't worry about the warning you get about not being able to read the drive, thats because your drive is NTFS and DOS can't access it.

Just ignore that warning and type: fdisk /mbr

GoBack partitions gone!

Far out, man! Me & my data are saved thanks to Brian_K & DaveH, who went thru days of me asking questions about the procedure before I finally did it. This was because I had data going back years which I hadn't backed up very well.

Kudos to both! Thanks a lot, guys.
