I have Norton Ghost 15. I installed it because I knew I was going to be doing a bunch of messing around. Sure enough I caused a problem and I want to "recover" everything to a fresh drive.
I booted from the Norton Recovery Disk. Unfortunately I could not open any network drives where my backup data was so I took an "internal" 2TB drive and copied the recovery directory onto it using my laptop. I then plugged the 2TB drive into a USB adapter (internal drive to external dock) but the computer could not find it. Finally I installed the 2TB drive INTO the computer along with my SSD (intended to be my OS drive).
During recovery the computer identified the 2TB drive as C drive but it could also "see" my SSD.
my backup consisted of a C drive backup and a "Local Disk" backup.
I had done 4 different backups since installing the software.
During the backup process I tried selecting (on different attempts) all 8 files that had been generated by Norton. Each time the computer would do something for about 15 seconds and then reboot. Upon reboot nothing would happen because the files had not been copied to the new drive.
Are there some instructions on how this software is supposed to work. Because it does not seem to work for me

chriswood,
Try restoring your .v2i backup image file from the network share to the original HD.
Boot from Ghost 15 CD
click on the time and adjust zone
click Network
Start my Networking Services
Analyze
Open Command Shell Window
net use Z: \\remotecomputername\share /u:username password (and press Enter)
almost immediately you will see "The command completed successfully"
exit the Command window
on main screen click Recover
Recover My Computer
you will probably get a message about no recovery points
in the View by.. select Filename
click Browse
double click Computer
scroll down to Network location
double click Z:
etc
If you have a NAS you can use IPAddress instead of remotecomputername.

WOW... so far this has been an absolute failure for me.
1. I have absolutely NO network access via the recovery CD.
2. When I install a hard drive directly into the machine I can recover the boot sector. But the other .v2i file is apparently "corrupt" or something (I should have taken a picture of the error message).
3. I got the old hard drive back up and running but now norton ghost will not even launch to try to create a new backup. Message is "Error in Main. Configuration system failed to initialize".
I was really hoping for something a little more robust than this when I bought it.

Does my method work? If not, what are the errors?
Is your network share on another computer or on a NAS?
Can you Verify the .v2i files (on your second internal HD) from the Ghost recovery CD?
What do you mean by "boot sector"? Ghost has no options for the boot sector.

1. I tried your method. I can't remember the exact wording but it basically said the path was not available.
2. files are on a NAS
3. No sure how to verify the .v2i files. It is a bit of a pain because I keep needing to put drives into and out of the box to deal with this.
4. when running "backup" from Norton Ghost 15 and backing up "my computer" there are two seperate components. The "C-Drive" and a 100mb boot sector. These are backed up independantly and they create unique .v2i files
Things have gotten worse in the mean time. Since Norton Ghost would not run I tried to uninstall and re-install. Now it will not re-install. I'm not sure what to do now

Installation message is
"Error 1935. An error occured during the installation of assembly component {63E949F6-03BC-5C40-A01F-C8V3V9A1E18E} HRESULT: 0x800736FD"

The 100 MB partition is not the boot sector. It is the System Reserved Partition. The boot sector is the first sector in a partition.
OK. Let's get your computer back to normal. Can you install the old HD with the sick Win7 and also install the HD containing the .v2i files. We are only interested in the .v2i backups of the C drive, not the 100 MB partition backups.
Boot from the Ghost CD,
Analyze
Explore My Computer
browse to your .V2i files
click to select the v2i that you want to eventually restore
click Verify (top of window)
After a while it should say the Recovery point is valid. Is that correct?

chriswood,
Have you fixed it? Feedback would be nice.

Thanks Brian
I think there was something wrong with the backup file... did it get repaired when I ran the analyze? I don't know but eventually I got things back up and running after doing the analyze
Ultimately I think I would need to create a custom boot disk with the drivers for my Ethernet if I wanted to do network storage to my drobo. Rather than deal with that I just took an old HDD (500gb) and stuck it in the box to run for backups. It was a lazy solution but it works.
Thanks again

oh yah... there was one other little glitch that I hit. When I ran the recovery the MBR was missing. To solve this problem I needed to install my Windows 7 disk and it ran a repair on the startup files.
The whole ordeal was a bit of a pain... But I'm hoping things will go better in the future.
