Hi i have tried several times and i just don't know how to do a one time backup to a usb drive and then install the OS via the usb drive as a clean OS.
How is it done?
When i go to Windows backup on a clean drive and boot up with a install disc it never recognises my Norton one time backup and i cannot install from it.
I'm getting another drive to go RAID and i may need to install my OS again. I cannot install my OS to another HD and it has to be a through a usb drive. I have Norton Ghost 14.

Could I get more information? Did you create a .v2i image on your USB external HD? Can you see the file on the HD?
Can you see a drive letter for the external HD when you boot from the Ghost CD?
Did you search for the .v2i by using "filename"?

Brian K, thanks for your help. I don't have my new drive yet. I'm just getting things sorted out for when it arrives. I have made a backup using the one time back up on my usb drive and it is a v2i image.
Do i need to have the Norton DVD running also?
What has happened in the past on an empty drive i have tried to run Windows setup from a Windows OS install disc and gone through to the restore from backup section. I have tried to get it to use my usb drive and failed to do it.

OK. You can only use that .v2i file to restore your OS partition on the same or a new HD. You boot from the Ghost CD, select "Filename" and browse to the .v2i.
Does this make sense?
You can try that now. Get as far as finding the .v2i and then abort the procedure. Naturally you don't want to over-write your OS.

There can be traps if you have extra partitions. Especially with Dell computers. How many partitions do you have in Disk Management? Which OS?
