MSCOMCTL.OCX error while installing Norton Utilities 14.5 on Windows XP SP3

[ Edited ]

Hello,

I stumbled on the following error while installing Norton Utilities 14.5 on Windows XP SP3:

"C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCOMCTL.OCX

An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file:

DeleteFile failed; code 32.

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

I successfully installed Norton Internet Security 2010 and Norton Ghost 15.0 just minutes before this problem occurred with Norton Utilities 14.5. I tried to restart the computer in hopes of stopping whatever process was using the mentioned file, but the error kept popping up.

I would be grateful for advice on how to get past this issue!

Regards,

Bartek

Hi Bartek - Sorry to hear this is causing a problem for you. Can you provide me with the full version number of Norton Utilities that you're running?

No 'b' at the end? Ok. Thanks. Let me do some checking around....

Re: MSCOMCTL.OCX error while installing Norton Utilities 14.5 on Windows XP SP3

What options do you get when the installer presents this message? Or does the installer simply quit?

Thanks for your patience...

Re: MSCOMCTL.OCX error while installing Norton Utilities 14.5 on Windows XP SP3

Robert,

The error comes up when the installer is extracting files. Everything seems to go well until it gets to C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCOMCTL.OCX.

There was no "b" at the end of the version number.

Thank you for your continued assistance!

Regards,

Bartek

Re: MSCOMCTL.OCX error while installing Norton Utilities 14.5 on Windows XP SP3

I too am running Windows XP SP3.  I have just loaded Norton Internet Security 2010 and am now trying to load Norton Utilities 14.0.  I have received the same error:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCOMCTL.OCX

An error occurred while trying to replace the existing file:

DeleteFile failed; code 32

The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Click Retry to try again, Ignore to skip this file (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation

Re: MSCOMCTL.OCX error while installing Norton Utilities 14.5 on Windows XP SP3

The version of my Setup.exe is 14.0.0.312.

I chose ignore and the setup completed - not sure if everything is OK, however.

SmartUpdate is now updating me to 14.5.0.116.  This update also has issues with MSCOMCTL.OCX - again chose Ignore.

The upgrade completed, the program loaded.

thudson2,

I followed your advice -- the installation and auto-update process went smoothly, and NU seems to be working fine.

Thanks for the solution!
