Hello,
I have a backup task that runs nightly. I've set the maximum number of backups to be retained at three. Today I noticed I have 6 backups instedad of three in the Norton Backup Folder on my external backup drive.
What am I missing and how do I accomplish my goal of maintaining only three backups? I'm running out of space on my backup drive.
Regards

Hi,
Can you give us a bit more detail about your backup set - just the usual who, what, where, why and how many.![]()
Thanks

Hello,
Yes, I'm, nightly, backing up the data drive (F) of my computer. This is a 400 Gig partition on a 500 gig mirrored drive, which has 250 Gig of data (music, docs, etc.). The OS partition (100 Gig) is backed up monthly.
The backup is on an external 1 TB USB drive (E). Why?........Computing discipline.
I've set the maximum number of backups to be 3 and I'm sitting on 6 retained backups.
I've deleted the task and re-established it. I'll get back to you on if this solves the problem.........Monday afternoon.
Thanks for your input, Dick.

The setting is for backup sets, not individual backups.
A "set" is the base image and all the incrementals that go with it.
For instance, if your backup is set to make a base image weekly and incrementals the other 6 days of the week, a setting of 3 will be for 3 weeks and you end up with 21 actual files. 3 base images and 18 incrementals.

Dave,
Thanks for your input.
The task I've established is to perform a complete backup nightly Mon - Sun. No incremental backups. So, if I understand you correctly, and I hope I do, I should only be maintaining 3 backups total......correct?
Sorry for my confusion.

Yes, your correct if thats how you have it set.
It should only keep 3 backups then. It does however need the space availible for one more because Ghost will create the 4'th before deleting the oldest one but you should only have 3 present.
Dave
edit- The 6 backups you have right now, are they all consecutive days or do you have 3 old ones that somehow didn't get removed but since then it's been working properly?

Hello Dave,
Good question. That's why I deleted the present task and re-established it. I've also deleted (through Norton) all previous backups except one. I'll know more on Monday afternoon.

Just want to report all is well and working as I want after I deleted and re-established the task.
I'm guessing "user error" was the culprit.

Glad to hear all is well.
If you ever meet him your 'user error' is named Murphy. ![]()
