NG15 SP1 - how to exclude drive and / or folders from file / folder backup

Hi all,

If this is a dumb newbie question, I apologize. I just bought NG15 and I can't believe what I'm seeing. Please help if you can.

My PC is Windows 7 SP1 64 bit. NG15 SP1. I have two hard drives: system on C: (2TB) and original partially failed system (1TB) on F:. My backup drive is on USB and is 2TB.

I don't have room on the backup drive to do image backups and no coin to buy another one.

I don't want to ever back up anything that's on F: (it's unreliable and only there to grab the odd file left over from when it was system drive). How do tell NG "Don't backup anything on F: ever"?

I have a bunch (300+) of movies that I don't ever want to backup (I have the original DVDs). How do I tell NG "Don't ever back up any of the files in the movie folder"?

Thanks for your help.

Joe

Re: NG15 SP1 - how to exclude drive and / or folders from file / folder backup

You can schedule Ghost to do a backup of C. I recommend doing incrementals as well. I do not recommend File and Folder Backup at all.

If you want to exclude something from the Ghost image, it isn't really designed to do that. However when youy run a backup from within Windows there are a few things that are intentionally left out. You could edit the registry and add you movie folder to a registry key and it should be excluded from the backup.

Have a look at this thread..

Re: NG15 SP1 - how to exclude drive and / or folders from file / folder backup

Thanks for the reply. Three followup questions:

1) If I do a backup of C: is there a 1 to 1 size relationship between the source and the backup? (I don't have room on the backup for a full size 1-to-1 backup).

2) can I retrieve individual files from the C: drive backup?

3) Why do you say to stay away from File and Folder backup?

Thanks, Joe

Ghost only backs up the sectors that hold data. There are several options for compression.

Yes, It is much easier to restore files or folders from an image file than from File and Folder Backup. You can do this two ways. 1. Mount the image as a drive letter and copy files using Windows Explorer. 2. Use Recovery Point Browser. Both methods work well.

3) Why do you say to stay away from File and Folder backup?

The files are stored in individual compressed files that have cryptic names. The Interface for retrieving files sucks. It is slower than just opening an image file containing the file you need. Using Ghost to image a whole partition makes sure your files are backed up. If you accidentally forget to include the file you need using File and Folder Backup, you are out of luck.

Thanks, Joe

Re: NG15 SP1 - how to exclude drive and / or folders from file / folder backup

Thanks for the reply.

As it happens, because my drive is a new larger one to replace the semi-failed original, I was able to shrink the partition by 500gigs then create a new partition for my movies. Now I can image backup my C: drive without unnecessarily duplicating 420gigs of movies.
