NSS Uninterpretable Background Scans

My system will crank up the "Norton Security Suite is currently performing background tasks"  when I am busy using applications and performing work.

I don't mind if it scans away when the system is idle, but it needs to step aside if I use the system, and certainly not initiate tasks if I am using the system/keyboard/mouse & the screensaver is off.

I have daily scans set up, manual scans.

How do I set Norton to suspend scans when the system is NOT idle?

Re: NSS Uninterpretable Background Scans

If you move your mouse, or type on the keyboard those scans should stop immediately. Maybe if your PC is an older one, I noticed it as well, it can run a bit more, but it will stop very soon after you are out of idle.

Do this happens by you, or it won't stop running scans whatever you are doing?

2.5 GHZ, Dual Processor, 4 gig of memory.

I agree, not only should it stop (it does not) but it should not start while I am using the pc.

Re: NSS Uninterpretable Background Scans

@ lathemill,

Have you observed any "regularity" to the scan interupting your work?  Does it occur daily at the same time?  I am curious if you have a scan scheduled in Windows Task Scheduler that is causing the scan to run.

Please explain how you have the daily scans set up....since as far as I know it can not be scheduled in NSS, but it can be scheduled thru Windows Task Scheduler.

Task manager: Error processing kicks off at 6am - that is the only Symantec/Norton item in the task scheduler.

Re: NSS Uninterpretable Background Scans

Can you please tell us the exact version number of your NSS?

1. Open main window

2. Click on Help & Support -> About menu

3. On the opened window find version number (looks like this one: 4.3.0.12).

Thanks.

@ lathemill,

Thanks for the info on how you have it scheduled and also what is in your Task Scheduler.

I need to ask specifically what "scans" you have set up to run per your above daily schedule.  Note this setting only affects the "tasks" you have check marked on the Automatic Tasks Tab.  Just to clarify, the Automatic Task Tabs does not provide the option for any daily virus scan.

Also please go to Tasks > Check Norton Tasks and see when the items you do have checked on the Automatic Tasks Tab were last completed and if in fact they say they were run during Idle.

Thanks for that - I didn't realize the setup had no automatic scan!

There was a scan started and canceled just now as I poked the "Tasks > Check Norton Tasks" thinking it would expand to a lists.

NSS 01g-Main Tasks.PNG

This is what you should see when you go to Tasks > Check Norton Tasks.  Clicking on the circled blue arrows will manually start the task.  This is not my system but a test system and I must give credit to Phil_D for sharing this and other screenshots with me.
