Other Norton Products

While this particular time I'm having the problem with norton utilities.  I get this same same problem with every norton product I pick up.  Whenever it does a back ground scan it takes vast amount of computer resources preventing me from doing any high CPU activity process.  I know it is Norton doing this because right when my computer finally stops slowing down, a message from norton pops up saying scan is complete.  Every time during the scan it shows almost the entire CPU is at system idle processes yet when I try to do anything, it goes super slow.  Using the computer does nothing to keep norton from hogging all the system resources.  I've even tried going into the task manager and giving what I'm doing priority but that does not work.  Even in past products I've used where there is a silent mode, it did nothing to prevent norton from weighing down the computer.  I've since gotton rid of norton internet security since it has a nasty habit of disabling virus protection once the subscription expired instead of leaving the current protection running but still using nortan utilities.  Norton utilities is causing major slow downs.  How do I fix this?

I'm sorry that you are experiencing these slow downs. If you can provide us with some additional information we should be able to make some suggestions which will resolve it.

What is your operating system, which version of what other Norton products are you running, do you have any other security software installed on your system? How much RAM is present and how much free space is on the disk being scanned?

Windows XP SP 3

Used to use Norton Internet Security v11 earlier and now use Avast v7.  I also used Norton Utilities v14 on both times.

4 GB of ram (computer says 3.25 GB though)

3.52 GB /70.9 GB on main drive

7.99BG/74.4 GB on secondary drive

Pentium(R) 4      3.40 GHz   3.39 GHz     Single Core

Hi,

Since you are using avast now did you run the Norton Removal Tool to clear out all traces of NIS before you installed it? Security programs do not play well together. Be careful, if you haven't run it before now it may remove the Norton Utilities as well when you do. I don't know of a better way to be sure you get a clean install of avast. Conflicts between security programs are a know source of high usages.

I did use the norton removal tool which is why I had to reinstall norton utilities afterword.  Also I'm using 32 bit and not 64 bit operating system.

32 bit versions of Windows will only use 3 GB of RAM.  Only 64 bit versions can utilize the higher amount of RAM in the DIM slots.  SInce it lists 3.25 there's probably some shared memory with your video card as well which I believe is the exception to this.  

NU (especially version 14 - do you have 14.0 or 14.5?) doesn't use the same idle time scheduler that the other Norton products have.  You say you know it's Norton because of scan results.  Could you share what results messages you've seen?  Do you have a screenshot?  When NU runs a scan, CPU utilization should move to one of the NU processes and not System Idle Process.  

To clarify, is the following used or remaining space:

3.52 GB /70.9 GB on main drive

7.99 GB/74.4 GB on secondary drive

If this is remaining, I'd say that's going to be a source of slowdown.  If it's used, then ignore my comment.
