After installing Norton Utilities 15 and clicking on the nu.exe ( the NU short cut icon created on the desktop during the installation) to start the program I get a strange response. First there's the small black "Norton Utilities" screen and then instantly "Windows Installer" screen opens and starts running. The only option is to press "cancel" and if you do Windows Installer runs "Cancel" for a few minutes but does nothing then starts running the install program again. Only after about 2 minutes the Norton Utilities program finally runs. Allowing the Windows Installer to run its coarse makes no difference because each time you open Norton Utilities the Windows Installer will run. I'm running Windows XP Pro 3 & also running Norton Internet Security 2012. I purchased the NIS 2012 & Norton Utilities 15 (NU) together as a package in December 2011 through the Norton website... download only no disc. I've been running NIS or Norton Anti-Virus continuously for over 10 years. In 2011 I purchased Norton System Works & deleted it prior to installing NU & NIS 2012. I downloaded & ran the Norton Removal Tool twice after 2 useless attempts of uninstall & re-installing NU. Thanks for any help and/or suggestions...

Hi,

the Windows Installer window that opens, what is written on it? Usually by this issue it's an other program's installer package that starts to run by the start of NU (we saw MS Office, some Corel programs here earlier that had this issue).

Hi PapauZ: Thanks for your response. What shows is a small window that says "Windows Installer" at the top left side and at the bottom right side is just a button that says "Cancel". There is nothing else written on this screen. Keep in mind this "Windows Installer" screen is in front of the NU 15 screen which is open on the desktop. I tried pressing the cancel button 3 times. Each time I would press the "Cancel" button and the button would fade. After less than a minute the "Windows Installer" would run again & again showing the "Cancel" button. After 2 more times the "Windows Installer" would close now showing the Norton Utility screen & then NU would run normally. This happens every time. Any thoughts...?

I see you had SystemWorks on the machine as well previously. How did you removed it prior the installation? Did you used eg. the specific Norton Removal Tool?

First I ran "uninstall" in System Works thru Control Panel then the Add and/or Remove Programs with Windows. Before installing my new NIS 2012 & NU 15.0 I downloaded & ran Norton's "Removal Tool" which I still have. I ran that sequence of Windows uninstall, Norton Removal & then install 3 times... no change.

Until they write to you can you please give us some extra details: When did you installed your Windows? And since the installation how much different Norton AV / SystemWorks / NIS versions were on it?

Hi PapauZ: Thanks again for your continued help. I've run Windows XP Pro (now version 3) since I bought my Dell computer in 2006. I've only run Norton Anti-Virus for the first 3 years (2006 - 2008) then only NIS every year (2009 - 2012) since then. It was only in 2010 that I added Norton System Works (NSW) as well as NIS. NSW ran fine with no problems. When I noticed this year Norton had Utilities 15.0 and since both the 2012 NIS & NU 15.0 came as a package I decided to purchased both this year. I'm still running NIS 2012 and it runs fine with no problems. Can I help in some other way?

I've seen this happen before.  It usually occurs when an applicaiton that uses install shield technologies has part of the installer cleaned up.  When you see the prompt come up instead of cancelling it, allow it to continue.  At some point it should give you a specific prompt about the application it is attempting to repair.  From there you can reinstall that product and then determine how the installer info was cleaned up.

Hi Eric: Thank you for helping me with this problem I'm having with NU 15. Since my last post about 2 weeks ago I've searched for some other help thinking that my problem maybe with Windows not Norton. I've downloaded and ran "Norton PC Check-up" & "Microsoft Fix It Center" with no luck. After reading your response I installed NU 15 again & let it run through as you suggested. I had the same small "Window Installer" screen open in front of the NU 15 box as before. The "Window Installer" ran with what looks like two very quick "hic-ups" and then NU 15 opened up full screen. Is this supposed to happen every time I run "nu.exe"? The NU 15 program seems to run okay... I don't see any error messages or notice any problems while it's running. I'm no computer tech so my trouble shooting options are limited so I guess I'll just leave it as is & run it until either it stops or my computer does. Thanks again for your help papauZ & Eric.

The installer window should not open up each time.  If it does, please let me know.  We'll need to know what actions have been done by NU in order to pinpoint what has happened.
