I have been subscribed to Norton Online Backup for some time since my last laptop was stolen, backup is done automatically daily and I can see the little notification that pops up when it has completed successfully or sometimes with errors, the errors are usually files I am working with while the backup was in process.

On occasion I have had to restore a file that became corrupted the problem here is that it works sometimes and sometimes not. What happens is the progress bar shows “preparing server for restore” and it just hangs there for hours with the progress bar bouncing up and down even with a file of only 56Kb.

Once I noticed a sentence which said “computer not on line” so a reboot fixed this but on many occasions if I want to do a manual backup or a restore it simply hangs and won’t work.  If the server is preparing for restore and nothing happens it is very frustrating and the problem must be with the Norton servers.  Anyone else experiencing the same problem? Or has anyone any suggestions to solve this issue?

I am having a very similar issue trying to restore files on my daughters laptop which had a HDD crash.  I had to replace the HDD and reload the OS and all apps, including Online Backup.  Since ONB sees the laptop as a new computer now, I am trying to restore files from the old backup set to the desktop on the computer.  I select the files that I want restored and indicate I want them saved to the desktop on the new name for the computer.  It starts the restore process and then just sits with the "Server preparing restore" message and the status bar bouncing back and forth.  It appears I can restore individual files ok, but I'm not real keen on having to restore hundreds of files one at a time.

One other notable issue with my situation is that my subscription expired back in Oct. of last year and so I just renewed the subscription for another year.  I can see the files that are in the backup set when I log into my account; I just can seem to get them to restore.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just for your information, I spent 3 hours with online help chat who were telling me my connection was slow but after 1 hour waiting to restore a 56Kb file they finaly did something. Taking control of my computer he clicked the instal new computer icon and reinstalled the NOBU and hay presto everything works again. I asked him what he did as I noticed him clicking the new computer icon but I never saw a new computer was added, here was the reply:

client when the NOBU client is showing in the
system tray, it will not add another computer.
It will just overinstall.

That fixed my problem,  I hope it helps someone else.
