Norton won't update the Firefox Toolbar

[ Edited ]

On Nov 14 my system crashed and I had to use the Windows 7 installation disk to do a system restore to Nov 5.  Ever since then Norton has not updated the Norton Toolbar for Firefox 8.0.1 (Norton seems to be working fine otherwise).  In the Firefox add-on it says the incompatible toolbar is version 2011.7.2.3.  For the last two weeks I have run Live Update several times and rebooted...I also uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox twice to no avail.  FYI, I'm using Comcast version 5.1.0.29 of Norton 360 and the toolbar did update successfully prior to the system restoration.

Re: Norton won't update the Firefox Toolbar

This is a situation I have come across before in NIS, N360 and NSS with FF 6 and FF 7.   Following the exact procedure that follows has produced the desired results of the NTB appearing in FF.  Do not add any addtional steps such as running the Norton Removal Tool, as that will cause you to lose your ID Safe, customised settings and will also remove any other Norton programs you may happen to have installed.

The order of things being in the right place at the right time and in it appears with default settings for all updates to take effect and rebooting everytime you are asked to by liveupdate is important.  I have found the following to be the magical combination to make it all work.

Please do the following in the order I list:

Totally uninstall Firefox

Download a fresh copy of Firefox 8.0.1. from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/

Install the fresh copy of firefox.

Remove NSS using Programs and Features (Add/Remove Programs if you are using XP) - do not run the NRT as you'll want to keep your Identitiy Safe and other settings.

Download a fesh copy of Norton Security Suite from here:  http://xfinity.comcast.net/constantguard/Products/CGPS/norton/  Please click on the No Thanks button on the Constant Guard Protective Suite popup so you can see the Get It Now Button.

Install the fresh copy of NSS. Run LiveUpdate as many times as necessary for it to respond that there are no updates available (rebooting as requested by LiveUpdate).

Once all that is done in the order I am asking for you to do it, please check Firefox 8.0 and let us know the version number  and also look at "Add-on's" and see if Norton Toolbar 2011.7.2.3 and Symantec IPS 3.2 are listed and shown as enabled.

Do you now have the Norton Toolbar in FF 8.0.1?

Please let us know how this goes.

Re: Norton won't update the Firefox Toolbar

Thanks for replying so quickly.  When you say "totally uninstall Firefox" are you referring to using only the Programs And Features to do the removal, or the deep version that will make me lose my bookmarks and customizations?

Try it with retaining your bookmarks/customization and see what happens.  I only use FF when troubleshooting problems concerning FF, so I am not sure.  I have used that term many tmies in the past and things always seemed to work.  It's been awhile since I had to do it, but I believe I used Programs & Features only.

Be sure to let us know so I can change the procedure to cause less confucsion.

I did exactly as you suggested and after endless LiveUpdates and reboots (until there were no more), Firefox still says the Norton Toolbar 2011.7.2.3 is incompatible with Firefox 8.0.1.  Not sure what else to do...

Re: Norton won't update the Firefox Toolbar

Sorry alfaken that it did not work as you did it.  I am not familiar with how much work it is to regain your bookmarks/customizations, but I would suggest you try it by removing it all, unless perhaps you wait to see if someone else can tell us if those  bookmarks/customization can be saved/exported a different way and then reimported.

I have NTB 2011.7.3.6 and Symantec ISP 3.2 both listed in FF 8 - Add-ons/Extensions as enabled.  Do you have the ISP??

Perhaps this thread will provide some additional insight  http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Firefox-8-Support-for-Norton-Toolbar/td-p/581640

Re: Norton won't update the Firefox Toolbar

Hi yank, it turns out that there was another update, so I rebooted again...and now the Norton Toolbar is working in FF8.  Not sure why it said there were no more updates earlier, but all is well now.  Thank you very much for your help.

I am glad all is well as I was really disappointed that it had not helped you.  You know simple things please an old man and that's one of the fixes I have been using and it "always worked".  I am very glad you got it sorted in the end!

Just for my information, just removing FF via add/remove ( without wiping out your bookmarks/customizations) did in fact work for you.  Right??

Re: Norton won't update the Firefox Toolbar

This newest version of FF now asks whether you want to keep your settings and bookmarks before you uninstall it.  I opted to keep those things intact and it worked out fine.  Thanks again.
