Question about 2006 - "Fix Now"

Earlier in the year, maybe January '08 or December '07, I renewed my subscription for Norton Antivirus 2006 edition using the online method.  Some time later, instead of the normal green check mark on the windows bottom tool bar there was a yellow triangle with the symbol '!'.  Clicking on the icon brings up a pop up stating "Attention Required" - 1 item is affecting your status - show details (Run Full System Scan - your computer has not been scanned for viruses and other risks. - Click Fix Now to repair selected items.)  Clicking Fix Now changes the pop up to a blue '>>' symbol stating "Fixing Problems" - Fixing 1 of 1 problems - Please wait while these items are fixed - (Running Full System Scan - Fixing...).  After around 1 second of this screen it reverts back to the original pop up of "Attention Required" etc etc.  It would do this every time a 'Fix Now' was attempted. Back when the issue first came up I had done various methods to try and fix the problem through the troubleshooting page and online forums but was unsuccessful.  I since then have stopped trying as I do not really use the internet much on this laptop - it's mainly for typing reports and formatting school work to be turned in.  Now as school is winding to a close, I am focusing more attention on solving the issue.  So I am posting here for any insight.

I somewhat recall in one of the "random forums visited / possible ways to fix this error pages I had looked at" in the past saying something about needing the CD to reinstall something.  I did not try that way then as I did and do not have the CD.  Perhaps, though, the problem is much much more easier to fix than that.  Hence, this post.  Any thoughts?

Just curious. Why don't you use the 2008 version?

This computer was purchased last year, I think around January / February '07.  At that time, we purchased the 2006 Antivirus software.  If there is some free upgrade from '06 to '08 I could do that.  I don't "surf" much so I am really not up-to-date about such things.  Though, to be fair, I did search for a very short while, before I registed an account on these forums, about any free upgrades from '06 to '07 and turned up some upgrades that were not free (I think 19.95).

hi Jamoah - from what i've read, upgrades from 2006 and 2007 to 2008 are free with a valid and active subscription - you can download it from here.

Re: Question about 2006 - "Fix Now"

Found and am currently downloading and installing 2008 through the "Symantec Download Manager".  The link given above didn't work for me mel, but I searched and found http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/98137/free-update-to-norton-internet-security-2007.html.  Using that, it linked to some upgrade-checker-Sysmantec-bridge program that checks the current version and shows what free upgrades are available for download.  I will see if this fixes everything.

Re: Question about 2006 - "Fix Now"

Hm...finished going through everything:  downloaded, ran the install, accepted the user agreement etc., "finished" installation requireing reboot, rebooted...then for the next, what, 20 minutes+ I stared at a screen saying "Norton is verifying your computer" or something along the same lines.  I ended up Ctrl-Alt-Del'ing the process and restarted.  I couldn't do anything while this screen was up, almost as if the computer was locked.  So now I have no Antivirus software at all.  Going to try the entire process over again.

Please try uninstalling 2006 with the NRT tool first --> than install 2008

The download manager uninstalled 2006 before it downloaded 2008 and installed it.  I just completed the whole process over again.  And 2008 is now installed.  I was able to put in my existing account information and have 119 days put onto my 2008 antivirus usage.  At the current time right now, Norton is updating it's definitions and protection.  So, I do believe everything is nice and in order.  After everything gets updated, I'm expecting to see the happy green check mark on the bottom toolbar.  I do appreciate both of your input and help MelodicWynd and Stu.  I'll get back asap after the LiveUpdate runs it's course...and it's done.  There is the green check mark...and I have Norton 2008.  Fantastic!  Thanks again you two.  (^_^)
