Hi redk,
In fact, I did ... thanks. My 'suspision' that the new SpeedDisk is in fact not a current version of the Norton SD may indeed be right then. My 'leanings' are towards keeping the SD version I have. As long as nothing blows up, that is! Best, CBA

I'm not really sure what they are calling Speed Disk now. I personally use Defraggler. It works fine for me. It's updated regularly and the price is right!

Hi redk,
Just visted PC Tools website and they have a broad offering in areas partly similar to Symantec-Norton. Probably lots of cross breading going on ... which is not bad, in principle, as long as the result is transparent. Then again, most people don't care as long as it works...
It's been an informative thread ... so thanks to all! Best, CBA

Parts of the NU part are not written correctly to be up to date with the current products. Even though you are still running xp with the latest sp and updates, NU hasn't been updated with all those updates and has kept up with any changes made to the registry for example.
Hi floplot,
Off topic (sorry), but, as I have a copy of Norton PartitionMagic Version 8.05 (Build 1371) 05/05/2004 running on my computers as well, am I to assume that this (exellent) product is no longer compatible with XP Pro Sp3 with all fixes installed? I know, this has nothing to do with my SW 2003 - NAV 2011 question .. except that PM8 and SW 2003 are approximately of same vintage...
There are virtually no discussions on PM8 since 2008/09, as the product (regrettably) is not being updated. Knock on wood, my PM8 has never let me down ... and has been of great value through the years. Of course, once one settles on a partition layout, it's hardly used. But, is great to have if/when the need arises...

I think with PM8 the only problem can be the support of newer HDDs, as it has no updated driver for the new models, like latest SATA and SSD drives. Plus the Vista and win7 support, it will not run on the new OS versions.

Hi PapauZ,
For the time being, I'm (and plan to stay with) on XP Pro ... which is doing all I need, and more. And all my drives are PATA, so that's not an issue either, however, not sure whay PM8 wouldn't handle SATA once the controller and the drives are okay-ed by XP. And as long as I keep the partition size(s) withing reason. This is copied from the PM8 manual:
• Large partition support – Enables management of partitions up to 300 GB when the partition is less than 90% full. Larger hard drives may require additional memory.
Except for my external 1TB USB drive (only backup), which is not partioned into smaller drives, I can't see any reason to have a partition larger than the limit anyway. But, that's me. Suppose the way to go is to use PM8 until I change OS and/or PM8 tells me "I am too old to support this action" or something. Just like the plan I have for SW 2003. Then I may look at Acronis, or similar, as I like their True Image software. Thanks. I think that's all I need for now...
