Last weekend I upgraded (if you can call it that) some friends and family members from the Comcast version of McAfee to the Comcast version of Norton.
My parents had the weather gadgets on their sidebar that showed the weather conditions at various places. After installing Norton the weather gadgets don’t work. They are blank. I assume that they can’t update, but I have checked the Norton firewall and I don’t see any reports that they are being blocked. Any ideas?
I don’t remember the specs on the computer but it’s a fairly new (year or so old) Dell running vista Home 64 bit with all current updates.
I understand that main problem here is Vista, but I can’t update them to Windows 7 yet. My mom really misses being able to see everyone’s weather at a glance.

Create a firewall program rule for the Sidebar.
Steps:
1. Find the sidebar exe. If everything is installed by default it will be here: C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe
2. Open Norton Security Suite
3. Go to Settings -> Firewall -> Program Rules
4. Find sidebar.exe on the list, if you do not find it, add it manually
5. Click on the Add button
6. Select the recommended option (configure it manually), click OK
7. Select Allow, click Next
8. Connections In and Out, click Next
9. All Computers
10. All ports
11. Logging is not neccessary, just click next without selecting anything
12. Add a name (if you wish :))
13. Click Finish
14. Click OK
15. Click Allow
16. Close Settings, and the NSS window
Now test the gadgets. If they still can not connect you can change this:
1. Open Norton Security Suite
2. Go to Settings -> Firewall -> Program Rules
3. Find sidebar.exe on the list, if you do not find it, add it manually
4. Change the Acces (right side) from Automatic to Allow
5. Click Allow
6. Close Settings, and the NSS window
Let us know the results.

Thanks, but I tried both ways…. Neither worked.

Are you behind a router, or directly connected to the internet?

No router, they are connected through a Comcast Modem.
Everything was working fine. I uninstalled McAfee, ran the McAfee Clean Tool, Installed Norton, gadgets in side bar that had been working now do not work.
I updated Norton, looked for anything that was blocking the sidebar, found nothing, waited a couple of days, still didn’t work, Uninstalled and reinstalled Norton; still didn’t work. Tried your steps -1-16, nothing, tried 1-6…. Still doesn’t work.
The first pic below shows what the gadgets should look like, the second pic shows what they are doing now. The circles are spinning in the Norton gadget and the weather gadget just stays blank.

What happens if you remove the Norton gadget?
On the gadget list right click on the Norton one, and select remove.
Then close the sidebar.exe, and restart it.

Nothing.
Deleted both gadgets, closed the Sidebar, reopened it, and added the gadgets…. Same thing. The circles in the Norton gadget just keep spinning and the weather gadget does nothing.

What happens if you remove Norton? Do your sidebar gadgets work then?

I mean deleting the Norton one as a full remove, that you will not be able to see in on the gadget list.
You can do a copy/backup of it by saving it from the gadged folder.

Dave,
Since you are using the COMCAST version that means that it is effectively Norton 360 not Norton Internet Security which is dealt with in this forum. There is a Norton 360 Forum but because the COMCAST version differs in some details from the Norton 360 retail version it is covered in the Other Norton Products Forum
I've asked for your thread to be moved but you won't lose site of it because a link to the new location will be left here.
You should get more relevant support there and what you are experiencing might be due to some ideosyncracy in the COMCAST version -- have you checked out their own Forum which runs separately from here?
