Re: Tried to use ghost to upgrade to lrger hard drive, now new drive won't boot

[ Edited ]

sfalco1957,

I suspect you didn't restore the 47 MB FAT partition. Correct? The 4.01 GB FAT32 partition doesn't matter.

A few questions you haven't answered yet...

Does your laptop have Dell MediaDirect?

Does the BIOS see the new HD? What size does the BIOS report the new HD?

I really need your answers about the BIOS as I suspect you have a hidden Host Protected Area. HPA do not appear in Disk Management. This is a Dell innovation which can cause havoc when upgrading HDs.

An 80 GB HD is 74.5 GiB. Disk Management reports your old HD at 73.1 GiB so there is 1.3 GiB "missing". I think this "missing" space is the HPA.

Thats impressive how you figure that out Brian.

As I said before, every time I see a 80GB hard drive I always worry about a BIOS limitation and when I saw this post about a Dell running XP with a 80GB drive I also remembered the media direct issue but never thought to check the partition sizes like that.

Same here. But I don't think this model has the 128 GiB HD BIOS limitation.

Re: Tried to use ghost to upgrade to lrger hard drive, now new drive won't boot

OK, the laptop has a button that says Dell MediaDirect.. No idea what it is..  Currently I am creating a backup with the OS booted, and I selected all 3 partitions that the Disk Management shows..

So, the next step I will do is put the new HD in and reboot the Ghost CD. I can stop the boot and go into BIOS to see what it shows about the new drive, I'll report that next....  I'll have to use another computer while I do all this, so I can monitor this forum while messing with the Dell....

sfalco1957,

You have MediaDirect 2 which is a curse of certain Dell laptops. I'm interested in hearing how your BIOS reports the new HD.

Re: Tried to use ghost to upgrade to lrger hard drive, now new drive won't boot

Ok, new HD installed, booted and viewing BIOS.. shows a 78GB HDD as the primary hard drive, even thought it is a 320GB drive.. Perhaps my earlier attempt has caused this to report the wrong size??

That's what I suspected. It's not your fault. If your computer had been anything other than a Dell with MediaDirect 2 you would have had a successful restore.

Dell MediaDirect 2 is stored in the HPA which can't be seen by any conventional partitioning app. On your old HD it starts at about the 78 GB mark. When you clone or restore an image to a new HD the HPA is created at the 78 GB mark and your HD will apppear as 78 GB in size in all apps.

Special Dell code in LBA-0 and LBA-3 causes the HPA creation so the first thing we need to do is remove this code. Then we need to remove the HPA. Then the HD will show as 320 GB in the BIOS. The next step is to restore (one at a time) the first and second partitions. Forget the third partition. The main thing to remember during the restore is to NOT RESTORE the MBR. Usually we do restore the MBR but this situation is the exception. Restoring the MBR would restore the Dell LBA-0 and LBA-3 and then the HPA would be recreated.

Let's do this in stages. Download CopyWipe for DOS from...

http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/copywipe.php

Unzip the file, double click makedisk.exe, accept the defaults and make a CD. New HD in the laptop. Boot from the CD, select Wipe a Hard Drive, BIOS HD, Hard Drive 0, Quick - 1 Pass, etc.

When it has reached about 2% you can press Esc to Cancel. That's enough to zero LBA-0 and LBA-3.

DownloadSeaTools for DOS...

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

Burn the ISO with IMGBurn to make a CD. Boot from the CD...

select your HD
Advanced features
Set Capacity to Max Native
Exit

This should have removed the HPA. Check the BIOS again and let us know the size of the HD.

Don't be disheartened if your HD still shows as 78 GB in the BIOS. Sometimes extra manipulation is needed with other software.

Did the copywipe to7%.  Seatools pgm fails trying to set capacity to native mode..

Check to be sure that the drive has been Power Cycled.
