Upgrading Hard Drive with Ghost 14.0

I bought Ghost 14.0 so I could upgrade my hard drive to a bigger one. I've run the Copy Drive program but when I try to switch the drives over nothing works. Can someone please give me idiot-proof instructions for doing this? I've got an older Dell 8300 running Windows XP if that makes a difference. Thanks!

crwchf16,

Don't use a USB external HD. Make sure both HDs are internal.

Your options should be...

Check source for file system errors
Check destination for file system errors
Resize drive to fill unallocated space
Set drive active (for booting OS)
DON'T Disable SmartSector copying
Copy MBR
Destination partition type...  Primary
Drive letter.... Choose "None"

Edit... If you have a Dell EISA Diagnostic partition preceding the OS partition, it must be copied first. The options are...

Check source for file system errors
Check destination for file system errors
DON'T Disable SmartSector copying
Destination partition type...  Primary
Drive letter.... Choose "None"

The suggestion that the user not use an external USB drive can be problematic when the user is attempting to replace a small portable drive with a larger portable drive in their laptop.

I got a secret,  It's not you.  Ghost14 Copy Disk does not work... Don't use it until Symantic correct it.

Although that's true, it may be irrelevant. The Dell Dimension 8300 is a desktop.

Re: Upgrading Hard Drive with Ghost 14.0

The fact that the original poster is using a desktop is all well and fine but the real benefit of these forum threads is for other users to search for solutions for them as well. If the solution is specific for the Dimension 8300, then perhaps it should be posted on Dell's web site.

If there are different directions for laptop users than for desktop users, both answers should be provided here for the benefit of all. Do note that in the non business market, more laptops are being sold than desktops.

The question was asked here, not on Dell's web site. The answer responds to that question.

Re: Upgrading Hard Drive with Ghost 14.0

rameeti,

The original poster asked about his desktop, not his laptop. crwchf16 wanted "idiot-proof instructions" but has not engaged in this thread so we don't know whether the instructions helped. Please start another thread if you are having laptop problems. We'll try to help.

Re: Upgrading Hard Drive with Ghost 14.0

Thanks to everyone for the help, I'm sorry I've been too busy to respond before now. Maybe I'm not computer litterate enough to figure this out, but I cannot seem to make the Ghost work. As far as zeroing the drives, that just confused me further. Here's a new thought; should I try backing up my drive with Ghost before I try cloning it?

Could you provide more details to help us formulate a plan.

How large are the HDs?

How many partitions are on your old HD? (Look in Disk Management) What size are the partitions? How much Free Space is in each partition?

Are both HDs mounted internally?

Does your 8300 have SATA HDs?

"but when I try to switch the drives over nothing works."

What do you see when you try to boot from the new HD?
