Can't start Norton Utilities from the desktop icon because its already running per task manager. And there is no small icon in the Task bar notification area to open the running program with. How do I run (Open) Utilities 14 with out stopping it first in task manager. i.e. How do I get the icon to show in the task so I can click it to open the utilities main control panel. This problem is on both of my my XP machines.
Its Working OK on my Vista PC..I.e.. Shows in the task area on the right side

Hi Perryking,
I'm curious if you have a lot of things which load at startup on the computer which exhibits this problem vs the one which does not.
I have a similar issue which is intermittent with other (non Symantec) startup services where sometimes the icon is missing from the task bar even though it is running. I believe it is a race condition or contention issue when lots of processes are running at startup.
Your issue could be something different but then it could be the same so its worth exploring the possibility.
There are utilities out there than can make tweaks to the startup sequence so that important ones like NU can be made to load first and thereby minimizing the chance you will have this problem. Let me know if you want some help researching these kinds of utilities.
Does this happen every time? Another thing you can try is using 'msconfig' to limit the amount of processes which loads at startup and see if the problem goes away. If it does, this increases the chances that it is occuring because of the number of processes.
Hope this helps and I'll be happy to help you research further.

Thanks for reply. Actually I don't have a lot of processes loading on either of the two XP PRO PC's that the problem accrues o. I just installed Utilities a few days ago. On these two machines the task bar icon has never appeared. on my newer Vista Pc it appeared right after installation. On the Vista PC I probably have many more process loading than on the XP machines.
Ok n the priority start up utility. Im aware of many such programs BUt not ones with the priority option, so your recommendation on those would be appreciated.
I think it is a design Flaw, installation problem or at best a configuration issue. But I have started the program up, by first killing the process using the Task Manager, then trying all the configuration settings and monitor settings. I posed the same help request question to Norton Support, will see what they say about the problem, if any thing. Perry

Hi Perry,
Thanks for the information. Obviously for you there is a different issue. As I understand it, if you try to run NU from the start menu it tells you that it is already running, correct? Then if you shut it down through task manager and launch and then run it from the start menu, does it then appear in the task bar?

Hi perryking,
I found this knowledge base article for the same issue:

Please follow the steps in this article and check for the issue.

Hi Pore_vinod,
Thanks for the link, I had not had a chance to research this more yet and have only recently started messing around with the new NU. I had not run into this since I don't use DEP at all - I found it was more trouble than it was worth in my case. ![]()

You are most welcome Allen. I have never faced this issue with Norton Utilities yet so never tried the solution given in the article. I found this article in search so thought it would be helpful.
Waiting for the results from perryking.

jduk,
You don't see nu.exe in taks manager, but other items? What other Symantec items do you see in task manager? What Symantec products do you have installed? Are you able to open those?

Norton Email support sent me their solution as follows in answer to my query to them re this problem. But I said Nuts, I don't have time to mess with it, so I just used Norton Utilities Start Up manager itself to go in and stop Norton Utilities from loading at start up. i.e.. Forget the "Monitoring" this way I can just run the other utilities when I want to. Some day I might try their fix, but in the meantime I think Norton just should fix the problem their selves and propagate an update. Perry
1. Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
3. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
4. On the Data Execution Prevention tab, select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
5. Click Add, and then locate the following Norton Utilities files one by one: These files are located at C:\Program Files\Norton Utilities 14.
