Did you upgrade on top of the '06 version? You should have done a clean install.
Try going to '08 version that's much faster

Hi maidenhead,
I'm sorry to hear about the long scan times you are experiencing with Norton AntiVirus 2007. I agree with Stu that installing 2008 is our best first step - you can get it here.
Please let us know how that goes.

By clean install do you mean uninstall the previous version?
Yes.
Please uninstall the "old" version first

I've had Norton A/V 07 for a few months now , and my previous version of 06 worked just fine, but 07 takes a painfully long time to complete a scan. I started my scan about 8 hours ago and it's not even halfway through. I could check on it in another 8 hours and it still won't be done. Does anyone have any ideas or solutions?
8 + hours of scan time is way beyond anything to be expected for personal systems. Stu and Matt have made good suggestions for correcting it by upgrading to NAV 2008. However, there also are some other things you should consider to help reduce scan time (FYI, on my Pentium 4, XP Pro system with 3 GB of RAM and 1,000,000 + files, full system scan now is taking almost 1 hour using NIS/NAV 2008):
1. If you don't have at least 1 GB of RAM with XP on the system (2 GB with Vista), it would help to increase the RAM to those levels.
1a. Particularly, if you have numerous programs simultaneously runnung on the system, you should consider colsing down all but the essential ones (e.g., not your security programs) during the scan.
2. Clean up your hard drives to get rid of the temporary and unnecessary files before the scan. Also consider emptying your recycle bin.
3. Defragment your disks so that scan spends less time searching.
These measures will not eliminate slow scans, but they should help minimize them.
