I ran into the problem that registry defrag corrupted the registry and the pc would no longer boot and all normal repair mechanisms failed. Found a solution to rename the five reg files in another thread (would have posted there, but the REPLY button is grayed out)
The last message in that thread (from symantec, see below) indicated the problem was fixed, gave the new version needed, but my smart update runs and doesnt give me any updates.
I am at version 14.5.0.116.
This response claims I need 14.5.0.118 to get around the bug.
<last email of other thread below>
Yes, this issue has been fixed. You need to run Smart Update in order to update the revision to 14.5.0.118. Once applied the problem will not recur.

km_2011,
You can update your product to the latest version by downloading it through the below link.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi KrisL,
The link worked for downloading a .120 version.
Where did you find that link? the one I found still referenced the bugged .116b version.
Do you know if it is the latest v14 file ? (i saw v15 advertised)
Thanks
It is a TERRIBLE thing that the SmartUpdate doesn't work, and the Symantec links point to old versions that have bugs that corrupt systems. SYMANTEC should correct this!!!!!!!!!
