nortons ghost 14 how does it work?

installed ghost and took a one time back-up of my c: drive 8G to an external drive.  what i dont get is should my drive become corrupt or need the image re-installed how would i do this?

i assumed i would create a boot disk that a could use to point to my norton backup folder on my external drive?

i cant find a boot disk though? (or am i just blind?)

i want to make sure the back-up works rather than wait till i need it only to find it doesnt.

i have a fresh install with all programes, updates, drivers installed and want to use the back up as n image i can re-install every few months to keep it running smooth

Welcome to the Norton Community

You need to boot from your Ghost 14 CD with your external drive connected. Once the boot completes then Ghost 14 will show you what backup images it has available on your connected drives.

If your Ghost was a download rather than a boxed version with a CD then you may not have a recovery CD. You can create a recovery disk by opening Norton Ghost 14 going to Tasks and selecting Create Recovery Disk

This document should help

Re: nortons ghost 14 how does it work?

Hi,

I've been testing Ghost 14 on a new system.  I want to make sure that I can count on it to restore my C drive if it crashes.

I can boot my Ghost 14 installation disk and access all my SATA hard drives (3), SATA DVD burner, and USB drives.

I have a thread here that describes what I've done.  So far, I'm not totally comfortable.  I hope that you continue to post your experiences.

The best advice I can give you is to read the Ghost 14 User Guide. It is full of lots of useful information.

You can download the guide from here

Hi donadoni,

After you replace your hard drive, you'll boot with the recovery disk (installation disk) and restore your selected recovery point (image) to the new drive. The process is the same as restoring to the original drive, but there are some additional considerations. You'll want to restore to unallocated space (not a partition) and use these settings:

Select:

-- Verify

-- Check for file system errors

-- Set drive active

-- Restore MBR

-- Resize drive to fill unallocated space.

Re: nortons ghost 14 how does it work?

For what it's worth, checking restore MBR on my Vista 64 bit system resulted in an endless loop back to the BIOS check.  Restoring a recovery point without checking restore MBR resulted in a disk that booted up without a problem.

The Ghost documentation, which I think needs considerable reworking, would be more helpful if it contained some Vista specific information where Vista differs from XP.
