Browser woes

I'm pretty tired of all browsers now. I gave up on IE7 long ago for FFx 3, only to be one of the "lucky" few that got a build that constantly crashes and despite numerous updates, can't get rid of the problem. Any ideas?

I also have Safari and Opera 9. Not a big fan.

I am trying to now use a blend of Chrome and IE8. I like Chrome but Shockwave keeps crashing on it, making it slow as molasses and requires many restarts. Anyone know how to fix that problem?

Firefox crashes are frequently a result of an add-on misbehaving.  Have you consulted this Mozilla KB article on FF crashes?:

Re: Browser woes

@sendofjive thanks for the link. I've tried many of these suggestions and even removed all theme, extensions, and add-ons. Even installing a new clean version of FF results in crashes. We're talking about 6-10 times/day on a normal day of surfing. Mozilla Crash Reporters sends off dozens of reports a week thanks to me.

Sorry to hear that Firefox is being so difficult.  Check this more detailed MozillaZine KB article which contains short discussions about other installed software and plug-ins that can cause Firefox to crash.

Re: Browser woes

Interesting topic.

I have an issue that is nearly the same - Shockwave Flash mis-behaving deal. I use IE8, FF4.04 and Google Chrome. Incidentally, I didn't install the G Chrome. It self installed with another app and didn't give me an option to check or uncheck the GC install.

Anyway, the issue is, Flash content does not display in any browser I choose and this was occurring before the unwanted Google Chrome was installed. This appears to keep me from installing iTunes and Quicktime, as I get an error message during install, that tells me a Windows package is missing. <<< I can fix this with a fresh install of all apps and plug-ins, most likely. I just hate to have to go through this process.

My main reason for replying though; is G Chrome crashes the same for me, as it is trying to display active content for an eternity, before freezing up or just CTD'ing

FireFox simply loads blank boxes where the active content should be displayed, but it doesn't crash and the same with IE8. In IE8, instead of the content window I get a message saying, "You either have Java turned off in your browser, or you need to install the latest Flash utility."

Well, my Jave is turned on under internet options and my Java and Flash are completely up to date, so I am stuck here. If I do a re-install of Flash it tells me it was successfully installed, but nothing changes :(

I am thinking of going backwards to IE7, as a tech manager has advised me to do. He claims that IE8 is designed for Vista, but I am running XP/sp3.

So,...is the tech guy correct? Should I be staying with IE7 for XP, where my flash content used to work just fine?

Re: Browser woes

Hi CrybKeeper,

Are you running any programs that have the capability of blocking flash content, such as SpywareBlaster or older versions of NIS?

You can use I.E. 8 on X.P. with Service Pack 3; it is Compatible.

Please can you also Post your Flash Version.  Thanks!

I use SpyBot Search & Destroy with TeaTimer, but that never stopped the Flash utility in the past. I have the latest Flash 10.0 something. I have disabled this to test things and installed while it was turned off. It didn't change anything though.

No NIS. But used to be the one I used, back when I was using Window 95 or 3.1. The reason I signed up here is, because installing the latest version of Flash also installed a free scan from Norton.

I don't use Anti-virus utilities. They are not necessary.

This all started when I attempted to install QT and iTunes to my FF and Google Chrome, by the way.

Here, you can see in Chrome that an error occurs in the script. Something to do with vslider, but I cannot seem to find this SWF object in my S&D list.

Sorry to bump this, but couldn't seem to edit below my images in my last post.

Vslider is a video slider option on My Space, that uses Java and Flash for viewing and scrolling through the video thumbnail images.

IE8 is compatible with WinXP, I know this, but it's not very stable with that OS, per advcie by other techs I have chatted with.

Guess I am going to re-install Windows. Didn't want to do that, but there is nothing on this PC that is important, so...

Hi CrybKeeper

The lastest version of Adobe Flash Player is  10.0.42.34

The latest version of Adobe Shockwave Player is  11.5.6.606

The latest version of Java is 6.18.

If you are using Spybot with TeaTimer enabled, that will prevent a lot of updates to your programs since it doesn't allow changes to the registry. If you are using Norton products, it will interfere with them also.

If you are removing Adobe Flash Player, you first have to use their special removal tool for that particular adobe flash player. The tool changes as the player changes.  You can't just install Adobe Flash Player without first using that removal tool. You also have to get the correct version for your browser I think, Not sure about that though.....

Success always occurs in private and failure in full view.
