High CPU usage by Explorer

System check indicated 75 to 100% CPU usage.  This is a new machine with 2G's of memory and 500G's of storage.  Machine is used to play Zynga games, some emailing and light surfing.  Does anyone have similar experience?

We need some more information to best help you -- here's my boilerplate. Once we know what Norton product you are using we can get you moved to the Forum dealing with that one and you'll bet better help ....

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help or Support / About is where the Version ID is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn where n is a number.

If you have the COMCAST version of Norton 360 / Security Suite and not the normal commercial version please be sure to tell us.

If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.

Please also say what internet browser you are using -- name and version number ...

When you say Explorer do you mean Internet Explorer the browser or Windows Explorer the file manager?

Once we kno which product you have I'll ask for your message to be moved over there or better exposure. You won't lose sight of it because a link will be left here.

Re: High CPU usage by Explorer

Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer?  Does the high resource usage coincide with heavy demand activities, such as when you are playing games?

Re: High CPU usage by Explorer

Thanks for the response....

I think I have what you've requested.

Firstly, it's a HP All-in-one machine, purchased in December 2011.  I believe it is running Windows 9, with Service Pack 1 installed, 64 bit.  There have been a number of routine security updates automatically downloaded as well.  I use Internet Explorer as a browser, v 9.0.4.  Please let me know if any of that does not make sense.

Norton is Norton Internet Security 2012, just downloaded to replace the freebie that came with the machine, v 19.5.0.145.  It is fully up to date.

You should know that I've also spoken to HP service rep who ran a diagnostic, which indicated some sort of problem with router/modem hook up, so I reset both.  4-5 year old Lynksys with a DSL modem from Century Link, the phone company.  Rep suggested new wireless router which I have ordered but have not yet received.  Hopefully this wasn't a foolish purchase but I figured 4 or five years on the wireless router may be just about the end of life in any event.

Re: High CPU usage by Explorer

yes, high usage when playing games, to the best of my knowledge.  Machine slows and it tends to lock up.  My wife is the principal user so correlation may not be direct.  Facebook, Farmville, Gardens of Time, Words with Friends-these sort of games.  Nothing too aggressive.

Re: High CPU usage by Explorer

Thanks for all the data, Charles ... BTW I hope it's WIndows 7 not 9!

If you can give me the HP model ID so I can look it up I'll have a better idea whether it might be hardware related or not -- in particular how much RAM memory does it actually have? I see things like free upgrade when I look at the website.
