Practice Safe Computing -- Think FIrst .......
The greatest danger to your computer lies between the left ear and the right ear of the user .....
I should know better but we just got an email from the "IRS" saying our check had been refused by our bank .... and I clicked on the enclosed PDF for details ...... even tho' it had an exe extenstion as well .....
Luckily either Norton protected me or the website had been shut down!

It's my understanding that it is best not to have more than 1 firewall and not more than one real-time anti-virus program running at any given time. I believe that is why Microsoft's firewall gets disabled when a Norton product that has a firewall running is in place but one still needs an a/v (hopefully real-time) program running.
I would think the programs for running a firewall and a/v are your choice. If you wish to continue using (I assume you are) NIS you can use anti-virus scanners such as Malwarebytes and they should not present an issue as long as they don't have the real-time feature enabled.
Take care,
