Third, Phil how do you mean No user intervention needed? Does that mean it does NOT require restart?

No.  Let me try to rephrase.

My machines are set to Notify me when updates are available but not download or install them. I then select those which I want to download and install.

In this case, there was no notification of any new update.  I restarted the computer for another reason and as the machine was closing down for the restart process, I was then notified that a Windows update was being installed.

I mention this in case others are surprised by this 'unannounced' update.

I haven't had this update on either of my laptops yet. Presumably it'll be downloaded to each one eventually!

Re: Out of band Microsoft Security Update June 18 2012

Well guess what? I to have this udate. It was installed on Monday June 18th.
Somewhat concerning as I too have my microsoft update set to automatically find updates, but NOT download and install without my initiation.
I set my system like that because I did not want to have IE9 automatically installed. Guess I'll have no choice since Microsoft can just install at will

Umm... the program merely updated itself.  If you check at the bottom of Windows Update settings it says:

"Note: Windows Update might update itself automatically first when checking for other updates."

So your settings will not apply to updates to the Windows Update program itself.

Re: Out of band Microsoft Security Update June 18 2012

I have 7.6 ... now.

Interesting experience since I shut down my mulitboot PC from Windows 8 last night instead of from my usual WIndows 7 and there's a UDF which when you start the PC up again, eg next morning, it puts up the WIndows 8 tile format boot selection screen instead of the normal "DOS" text one.

That happened this morning and I clicked on the Windows 7 tile to get my normal day begun and the screen went black although the mouse pointer was there and could be moved. This went on for some time and a could see that the disk drive light was flickering from time to time but after a while it went out and still a black screen so I pressed the restart button .....

This took me to the DOS chkdsk doing an error check on everyone of the 6 logical drives in the system but I must confess that I did press any key and got back to my normal Windows 7 desktop.

But I presume all of this was due to the WIndows engine update coming down and being isntalled during startup.

I'm going over to WIndows 8 now to see what it has ....

Hi Hugh I did note on the main windows update window the last update installed is not the updater download but the last regular update that was installed but if you go to the view update history window it does show the windows update agent 7.6.7600.256

Re: Out of band Microsoft Security Update June 18 2012

Hi all,

I've got Windows Update Agent is 7.6.7600.256 on both laptops now and the XP PC has been updated too. These updates installed without any prior notice, suddenly they were there in the update history!

I haven't looked at the history -- just checked the details of wuauclt.exe which had changed to 7.6.7600.250.

But checking history shows it claims to have come down on 6/21 at 11:43am .... but it says that the computer may need restarting...

Windows 8 has a 7.8 .... version but I don't know when that came down. I'll check WUD History on it when I'm back in it.
