The answer to that question is yes and no.

The reasons why I said “no”: Norton’s Confidentials purpose is to store login details either on your computer or in the cloud (Symantec’s servers) in encrypted form and enter those details using a copy and paste when required into the appropriate fields of an online form/login. This is done in order that keyloggers do not detect/read the data being sent to those websites since you are not typing those letters into those fields.

With Norton Confidential not functioning correctly you may not be able to take advantage of this added keylogger protection and the built-in phishing protection when visiting websites. I say “may” because I can still use Norton Confidential to log into websites, it only crashes after logging in. This may or may not be the same for you (it isn’t actually crashing; Google Chrome does not want to wait for it to respond and assumes it has crashed).

The reason why I said “yes”: Even with Norton Confidential not working correctly, Internet Security 2012 anti-malware capabilities are still fully functional and will protect you from malware (including protection from software keyloggers (if they are already installed on the computer, although this is very unlikely). Any malware detected will be resolved by it in the usual manner.

@Kurosh: I totally agree with you, companies the size of Symantec and Google should not be making such mistakes. I have read that Symantec work closely with Mozilla to ensure the Norton toolbar works with the monthly releases of Firefox and this seems to be working well for them(although, according to vittorionodari, this may no longer be the case).

I wish I'd read this before I uploaded the latest Norton updates this morning. I too am on Chrome and Windows 7 and everything worked fine until after the updates.

Now whenever I try and open Gmail, Chrome gives me a message that it (Chrome) has stopped working, even though it hasn't.

I also get a drop down message from Norton stating that "Norton Confidential has crashed." This message points directly to the https portion of my Gmail address. 

I hope a patch for this is released very soon, as I won't be messing around with this for long.

I am also having the same problem. I'm using Google Chrome, and just updated Norton 360. Until this update I haven't had a problem with Norton. Now Adobe Flash is a different story. It's always crashing.

Well if you know about it why dont you fix it.  It is Norton Confidential that is crashing, not Crome.

Seriouly unimpressed by Norton response.

My post above (dated: 16th August) should be of some assistance in answering your question whether or not Norton Confidential crashing is a security risk.

Even without the anti-phishing technology, Internet Security’s anti-malware, intrusion prevention and SONAR technologies remain active. Overall there is only a minor risk.

Hi All

I found another thread dealing with this same issue. Someone recommended going into Chrome tools, click Extensions and then uncheck Norton Identity Protection. I suppose you could delete it, but I just turned it off. That has taken care of my problem completely regarding the two issues I was having. 

I have never had an issue with Flash player. Are you running Windows 7?

Thanks for the info. With that plugin disabled, does the Norton Identity Safe still function in Google Chrome? This is fine if you don’t use this feature of Internet Security and merely wish to prevent the plugin crashing but if you wish to use this feature, this workaround is only a slight improvement.

Unless Internet Security is conflicting with Flash, let’s keep this thread relevant to the original issue. As you say Flash is working fine for you, I can confirm the same, so this is unlikely (but with the limited information known at this time, I could be wrong).

I don't know if I'm safe  to do online banking and financial transactions with the extension disabled - I would assume not. This is a real pain in the butt. I think essentially everytime I open Chrome I'm running without Norton protection now - protection I paid quite a bit for. After reading other threads, the same thing is happening, and has been happening, in IE and other browsers as well. 

To your question: Does anyone know if disabling the extension means that you are online with no Internet security aside from whatever the site you're on provides?

EDIT: Also, is Norton Identity Safe the same thing as Norton Confidential? Are we talking about the same thing or two different types of protection?
