Norton Cover

I have just ran a healthchek by Dell on my laptop, and this has picked up a number of issues e.g. registry errors, drive corruption, security holes etc - would Norton/should Norton not identify these. Some of the info is beyond me and so I am unsure if I should run the 'remedy now' option offered.

Hi Newarrival:

Welcome to the Norton forum:

Are you referring to Dell's free online PC Health Check here, or are you referring to a program that came pre-installed on a Dell PC?  Also, what Norton product and version do you have on your PC (e.g., Norton Internet Security; version can be found at Support | About)?

If you're referring to the online Heath Check this just looks like a system scan using iolo's System Mechanic, which is a utility program similar to Norton Utilities that can be used to speed up your system performance.  Many of the tasks performed by these optimizer programs (e.g., disk cleaning, hard drive error checking) can be done with maintenance tools included with your Windows operating system or with free third-party software like Piriform's CCleaner

Security software like NIS, NAV and N360 are anti-virus suites designed to protect your system from malware infections and protect your personal information and perform a completely different function.

If you'd like to post your Health Check report in Norton's general Tech Outpost forum, someone there may be able to help you interpret the information in the report and advise whether the "Remedy Now" option would be a good idea.

Re: Norton Cover

Many thanks Imacri,

I am using Norton Antivirus version 18.6.0.29, and it was the free online healthcheck (system mechanic) offered by Dell.

Not sure if I can copy the report and post it as you suggested - could not see any options to do that.

Thx again

Hi Newarrival:

If there is no option to save a copy of the report as a text file, see Yaso_Kuuhl's post here in the Forum Feedback board titled Forum Tip - How to Post Screenshots in the Forum.  You might be able to capture a picture of the report from your computer screen and post that screenshot in the Tech Outpost.

I'm guessing that many of the "problems" found by System Mechanic - especially the registry errors, which in most cases are stray entries left behind in the Windows registry when software is uninstalled - are completely harmless and pose no threat to your system.
