Why The Flamer Spam?
05-30-2012 08:09 AM
I've said this before: Symantec has the best software engineering combined with the foulest marketing. The Flamer spam we have all been receiving is a good example of the latter.
To begin: The name "Flamer" is a crude ripof of "Flame" - the name given by Kaspersky, who first discovered the virus. Symantec is trying to steal Kaspersky's thunder.
More important: For Symantec to boldly proclaim that it is protecting us from malware written to conduct espionage on targeted computers in the Middle East is ridiculous. Flame has thus far infected perhaps a thousand computers located in several middle eastern and north African countries. Although it has shown up elsewhere, that was clearly not the developer's intention.
In addition, Flame has been active since 2010, and possibly earlier, but it's only now that Kaspersky published its existence that Symantec felt the need to send a 'we are saving the world' email. This email looks not much different than the fake antivirus emails that Norton AntiSpam routinely filters.
Good work Symantec.

HI Bulldoggy,
You know what Flame is and I know what Flame is. But the press, as it usually does, is making this out as the latest most fearsome virus ever discovered. And that means that people are going to freak out. Look at how the recent announcement about the imminent shutdown of the DNSChanger servers panicked people into thinking they were all about to lose their internet. Given the headlines that Flame has gotten, I can't fault Norton for trying to get ahead of this and reassure their users. I would guess that Customer Support had already gotten its fair share of worried callers, needlessly and expensively tying up the Support Techs' time.
As to the naming of the malware, I'm sure you know that there is no agreed-upon convention and that everyone pretty much picks a name they like, ie,. Conficker, Downadup. Flame is also known as Skywiper, so it looks like Symantec was either looking for the best of both, or couldn't decide. ![]()

Personally, I had no problem with the email and certainly don't consider it SPAM. Considering the amount of press coverage this virus has received and the number of novice PC users out there, I thought it was appropriate. JMO

Kaspersky appears to be the first to have detection added, but even as of a couple of weeks ago, No body detected it fully or as Flame.
Now that it has been picked up on the media has gone nuts, even if not accurate, for instance what is using the word "Virus" all about.
