You know what Flame is and I know what Flame is. But the press, as it usually does, is making this out as the latest most fearsome virus ever discovered. And that means that people are going to freak out. Look at how the recent announcement about the imminent shutdown of the DNSChanger servers panicked people into thinking they were all about to lose their internet. Given the headlines that Flame has gotten, I can't fault Norton for trying to get ahead of this and reassure their users. I would guess that Customer Support had already gotten its fair share of worried callers, needlessly and expensively tying up the Support Techs' time.
As to the naming of the malware, I'm sure you know that there is no agreed-upon convention and that everyone pretty much picks a name they like, ie,. Conficker, Downadup. Flame is also known as Skywiper, so it looks like Symantec was either looking for the best of both, or couldn't decide.
