If NIS 2009 is the standard product and not a beta (which would be very surprising), you should be able to directly install over it. I did this on three of four computers (one of my two XP's, a client's XP and one Vista). I also did one clean install on an XP machine and found absolutely no difference in the result. My recommendation is go ahead and launch the installation.

Hi...I think they are referring to other AV programs that are NOT Norton. Naturally, if you upgrade or renew NIS2009 to NIS2010 you can either use Norton Removal Tool to remove NIS2009 and install the trial version os NIS2010. The NIS2009 sub will be brought forward to NIS2010 automatically. Of course, you can upgrade to NIS2010 too if your sub are still valid.
I prefer to Remove the older version of NIS than clean install NIS2010.
Thank you
P/S : Pls note that if you use NRT....all other Norton programs will be REMOVED.

Thank you - and thank you too, mijcar.
After giving the matter some thought, I've decided to do a clean install anyway, for the following reasons:
1. A clean install allows the best chance for success.
2. A clean install makes me focus on configuration decisions.
3. From what I've read, NIS uninstalls completely (if you do it the right way), and I am inclined to believe it, since Symantec has delivered on all its other promises for NIS 2009.
4. I'm comfortable with installing and uninstalling software.
NIS 2010...here i come.

In my opinion that's the best choice. less chances for bugs
